Announced back in October, the new Ironman Pro Series is a 17-race (per gender) pro long-course triathlon series that began with 70.3 Oceanside on April 6, and will peak in September at the Ironman World Championship in Nice, France, for the women and in October at the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, for the men. The final events of the points-based series will be held in mid-December at 70.3 World Championships in Taupo, New Zealand. There are six full Ironman events and 11 70.3s on the Ironman Pro Series calendar per gender—totaling 17 races for the pro men and 17 races for the pro women. Ironman Hamburg and the Ironman World Championship in Nice will be women only; Ironman Frankfurt and the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii will be men only.

The $1,700,000 series prize purse (full prize purse breakdown far below) is in addition to each event’s individual prize purses. Year-end bonuses will go to the top-10 athletes, per gender, who have the highest cumulative points total from their five top finishes. Racers who rank between 11-50 at the end of the year will receive a $5,000 bonus. While both Ironman and Ironman 70.3 events will count toward an athlete’s ranking, only a maximum of three Ironman events can be counted to the final bonus.
How Ironman Pro Series points are calculated
An athlete who wins an Ironman Pro Series race will earn the maximum points for that distance: 5,000 points for a full Ironman and 2,500 points for a 70.3. Winning the Ironman World Championship yields 6,000 points and the 70.3 World Championship 3,000 points. Remaining finishers will earn points based on their time deficit to first place – in other words, every second behind the winning time is a point deducted.
Why the Ironman Pro Series?
“There’s never been a time when pro athletes raced with us exclusively,” former Ironman CEO Andrew Messick said in an interview with Triathlete in October at the Hawaii Ironman Championships when the Ironman Pro Series was announced. “There’s always been Tristar, there’s always been Rev3, there’s always been Challenge. Now there’s the PTO. There’s always been alternatives for professional athletes, and we’ve always taken the position that it’s fine. For professional athletes, it’s not an easy life, and if you’ve got an opportunity to go make money somewhere, we never want to be standing in the way of people doing that.”
“We think it’ll be good for our broadcasts, our host communities, and the age-groupers to have bigger and better pro fields competing against each other more frequently,” Messick added.
