Milford Sound is the self-proclaimed eighth wonder of the world. I was definitely filled with wonder looking at the mountains looming out of the water and disappearing into the clouds. Seeing it was one of the things I was looking forward to the most during my time in New Zealand.

The greatest tourism and geoscience attraction in the southern hemisphere, in the nineteenth century were the siliceous Pink and White Terraces, the lost Eighth Wonder of the World in New Zealand. In 1886, the Mount Tarawera eruption buried the terraces.

The Pink and White Terraces (Māori: Te Otukapuarangi, lit. 'the Fountain of the Clouded Sky' and Te Tarata, 'the Tattooed Rock'), were natural wonders of New Zealand. They were reportedly the largest silica sinter deposits on Earth.

The eruption lasted six hours and caused massive destruction. It destroyed several villages, along with the famous silica hot springs known as the Pink and White Terraces. Approximately 120 people, nearly all Māori, died.

At the base of Mount Tarawera lies Lake Rotomahana, otherwise known as the final resting place of the Pink and White Terraces. At Waimangu Volcanic Valley, you can take a boat cruise across the fabled lake, just like many people did to see the Terraces in the 1800's.

When Kipling visited Milford Sound (Piopiotahi), the sight he witnessed was awe-inspiring. It's no wonder he labeled it as such. We all have some kind of familiarity with the seven wonders of the world. New lists are always coming up as we have more access to remote destinations.
