The Downsides of Cloudflare | Itomic (2024)

The Downsides of Cloudflare | Itomic (1)Cloudflare is a widely recognized internet services company that began operations in 2009. It offers a variety of services aimed at improving website performance and security, functioning primarily as a content delivery network (CDN) and a protective layer against attacks such as DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service). Cloudflare’s services include CDN functionality, DNS management, DDoS protection, secure sockets layer (SSL)/transport layer security (TLS) encryption, and web optimization features, among others. It serves millions of websites, ranging from individual blogs to large enterprises, making it one of the most popular services of its kind. It has a free version with limited functionality, plus paid versions.

Despite its popularity and wide array of features, using Cloudflare isn’t without potential downsides or considerations:

  1. Redundancy with Existing Hosting Features:
    • Overlap: Your hosting provider might already provide services like DDoS protection, caching, and optimized DNS. Adding Cloudflare could introduce redundancy without significant performance gains.
    • Complexity: Managing overlapping services can complicate your setup and troubleshooting processes.
  2. Dependency and Control:
    • Third-party Dependency: Relying on Cloudflare introduces another layer of dependency. If Cloudflare faces issues, your site could be impacted.
    • Less Control: Using Cloudflare’s security features might lead to overblocking legitimate traffic, and customizing these settings can be complex.
  3. Performance Overhead:
    • Latency: In some scenarios, particularly for regionally-focused websites with already optimized hosting, Cloudflare can add extra latency as traffic passes through its network.
  4. Complexity in Debugging:
    • Troubleshooting: Diagnosing issues becomes more complex with an additional layer in the traffic route. Identifying whether problems are on your host’s end, Cloudflare’s, or within your site can be challenging.
  5. Cost and Features:
    • Cost: Cloudflare’s advanced features require a paid plan. Assess if the benefits justify the additional cost over your existing setup.
    • Feature Limitations: The free tier has limitations, and some advanced features are only in higher-priced tiers.
  6. Security Considerations:
    • Shared Security Model: As a widely used platform, vulnerabilities in Cloudflare could potentially impact many users, including your site.
    • SSL/TLS Considerations: Cloudflare’s handling of encrypted traffic means it’s decrypted at their servers, which might not align with the privacy requirements for highly sensitive data.
  7. Privacy Concerns:
    • Data Handling: Using Cloudflare means all your traffic passes through its network, raising considerations about data privacy and compliance with regulations like GDPR or HIPAA.

Competitors: Cloudflare competes with a range of other companies offering similar services. Notable competitors include Akamai, one of the oldest and most comprehensive CDN services; Fastly, known for its powerful edge computing features; and Amazon CloudFront, part of Amazon Web Services, offering deep integration with other AWS services. Each competitor has its unique set of features, pricing, and focus areas, catering to different market segments from individual website owners to large enterprises.

When considering Cloudflare for your website, it’s important to weigh these factors against the specific needs and infrastructure of your site. For some, the benefits outweigh the potential downsides, but for sites with particular requirements or those already well-supported by their hosting environment (like Itomic hosting!), the decision might differ. A detailed assessment of your specific situation, with input from IT professionals, is advisable.

Generally speaking, Itomic does NOT recommend Cloudflare to our clients, for all the reasons listed above. This is because our hosting servers already include, at no extra charge, almost all the features of Cloudflare, and then some. To add Cloudflare on top of Itomic hosting services is likely to cause more problems than it solves, except in certain niche cases, which we’re happy to review with our clients!
