The Best Decluttering Tips You Need to Try ASAP! | Woodside Village (2024)

Whether you’re getting ready to move into our Kansas City luxury apartments or you’re just trying to get more organized at home, it can be difficult trying to declutter a bunch of random items from your home. No matter how hard you try, it’s easy to accumulate a lot of single-use items, “just in case” items, or items that you no longer use but can’t really seem to find a good reason to get rid of. Everyone is guilty of it.

The problem with accumulating all of this clutter, though, is that it then clutters your home. While a little clutter is perfectly normal, a little can soon become a lot, which can become overwhelming. That’s why, when you get the opportunity to do a bit of decluttering, you should jump on the chance!

Moving into our Kansas City luxury apartments here at Woodside is the perfect opportunity to get decluttering! Here are some tips that can help you to get started:

1. Don’t try doing everything all at once

No matter what kind of task it is, if it’s going to take a long time, it can be difficult to complete it all at once. For many people, cleaning their homes and going through their items can be overwhelming! That’s why you shouldn’t feel bad or be too hard on yourself if you aren’t able to complete everything at once.

Instead of tackling the whole house or apartment on the same day, try to break it up by room. Focus on one room a day, whenever you have time. It’ll make the task feel not quite so overwhelming and you’ll still be able to feel accomplished when you’ve completed that day’s room. It’s a win-win situation!

2. It’s okay to get rid of some mail

Unless all of your mail comes digitally, you’re always going to have some kind of mail pileup in your home. That could be bills, magazines, advertisem*nts, or any of the other random items that you could receive in the mail.

Go through your mail pile and see what is actually beneficial for you to keep and what can be tossed. If you’re unsure or still feel a bit hesitant to toss out some of your mail, try scanning it into your computer! That way, all of your important mail items are safe and secure digitally, and you don’t need to keep the hard copies for you to still have records of it.

3. Use the three box rule

The three box rule is a great rule of thumb when you’re trying to declutter. When you start cleaning a room, set out three boxes: keep, donate, and throw away. As you’re going through the items in each room that you’re questioning, ask yourself: would this serve me best to keep, would it help someone else to donate, or is it unusable and needs to be thrown away?

Giving yourself a designated space for each of these items helps to keep your space tidy, allows you to easily maneuver from room to room, and keeps you in the space so that you’re not constantly moving around the house to rearrange items. It’s a great tool for organization and for those who tend to get distracted during big projects like this!

4. Ask for help

Don’t be embarrassed to ask for help if you truly need it. Your friends, family, and loved ones are going to be willing to help you if you feel overwhelmed with the task at hand.

Plan a weekend where everyone comes over. Offer snacks and drinks, turn on some music, and let the people that you love most help you with a task that feels overwhelming on your own. You’ll be able to spend time with your loved ones, have a great time, and get this task accomplished that you wouldn’t have been able to complete on your own.

5. Multi-functional pieces are your friend

Are you short on space? Sometimes, the reason that your home or apartment is so cluttered is simply because you don’t have enough storage space. If you’re lacking in space, try purchasing multi-functional furniture pieces to give your storage a boost.

Couches that open up are great for storing extra pillows and blankets. Use a large dining room table to double as your desk. An ottoman makes for an easy, out of the way solution for hiding games, books, and other random objects in your living room. Plus, these pieces look great and can be used for multiple purposes!

6. Keep a clutter spot – but actually deal with it

Everyone has the equivalent of the “junk drawer” in the house. You’d be hard pressed to find someone that didn’t have a junk drawer, basket, or another random area that became a catch-all kind of spot. And that’s okay!

No one’s home ever has to be a hundred percent in order all of the time. You’re allowed to have junk spaces and catch falls. The catch to this, though, is that you have to actually deal with the junk drawer or basket as it grows. Don’t let this safe space to store your random clutter grow to overpower its entire space. Set aside a time once a month to go through the clutter space and deal with the items there. It’ll help you keep your home clean while still allowing you your clutter space.
