The Best Countries in South America for First-Timers to the Continent (2024)

For many travellers, the allure of South America is undeniable, with its rich cultural heritage, stunning landscapes, and diverse wildlife. However, some individuals may feel apprehensive about visiting this continent due to concerns surrounding health and safety.

When the Zika virus emerged as an epidemic in Brazil in 2015, news stories about that linked the mosquito-borne infection and microcephaly (babies born with smaller heads) scared a lot of people from travelling to the region. Frequent reports of crime, including theft and violence, especially in densely populated urban areas, deters some potential visitors. Some travellers might feel they don’t have the proficiency needed to communicate well in Spanish and Portuguese, which would result in feelings of isolation or helplessness.

Ultimately, while these fears can be valid—pickpocketing, for example, is a common problem—they need to be balanced with proper research and preparation. And your diligence in doing such research has brought you here!

Below, my travel blogger friends and I share the six best countries in South America to visit, even as a solo female traveller, based on our travel experiences. These countries span the length of the region and highlight the best the continent has to offer.

Understanding the specific areas to visit, ensuring vaccinations and health precautions are up-to-date, and learning a few key phrases in the local language will make any trip more safe and fun.

Best Countries to Visit in South America

Ecuador

Ecuador is a fantastic introduction to South America for first-time visitors due to its diverse landscapes, rich culture, and unique attractions.

The country boasts a remarkable variety of natural environments within a relatively small area. From the lush Amazon rainforest to the dramatic Andean highlands to the stunning Galápagos Islands, Ecuador offers a condensed experience of South America's natural beauty.

In the Andes, cities like Quito and Cuenca showcase colonial architecture, vibrant markets, and rich history. As the capital, Quito’s well-preserved historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site. I found charming streets that reflect the country’s colonial past and provide a picturesque backdrop for exploring local crafts and cuisine.

For those seeking adventure and biodiversity, Ecuador’s Amazon basin presents a gateway to the rainforest, where visitors can explore its rich ecosystems and Indigenous cultures.

One of the highlights of the country has become one of my favourite places in the world: the Galápagos Islands, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its unique wildlife and landscapes. Here, you can encounter species found nowhere else on Earth, like the adorable giant tortoises, and enjoy activities like snorkelling and hiking in one of the world’s most special environments.

Ecuador’s size means you can experience its varied attractions without extensive travel time. The country's friendly locals, delicious food, and relatively affordable prices further enhance its appeal, making it an easy and exciting destination for those new to South America.

Colombia

- By Pamela of The Directionally Challenged Traveler

Colombia is full of vibrant culture, rich history, and stunning natural beauty. You can dive into all sorts of experiences here, from lively city life to breathtaking natural landscapes. Colombia has moved past its old reputation and is now a welcoming destination. It's a great choice for anyone exploring the continent for the first time.

A one-to-two week trip is a great introduction to the country. The capital city of Bogotá is often overlooked by travellers, but it shouldn’t be. Explore the colourful and historic La Candelaria neighbourhood, take a cable car up to Monserrate for a gorgeous view, and visit the Gold Museum.

Next, head to Medellín, a city known for its innovative urban development and year-round spring-like climate. Be sure to spend a day exploring Comuna 13. This neighbourhood was in the centre of gang violence but has been transformed by art and community. The story is an inspiration. Take the Metrocable for views of the city, but also to learn how people get around this city in the mountains.

No visit to Colombia is complete without a visit to Cartagena. Located on the Caribbean coast, it’s more humid and warmer than Bogotá and Medellin. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage site because of its colonial architecture, cobblestone streets, and peaceful plazas. Enjoy a sunset stroll along the city’s ancient walls or relax on nearby pristine beaches.

If you're an adventurer, consider trekking to the Lost City, Ciudad Perdida, an ancient archaeological site in the Sierra Nevada mountains, or exploring the Cocora Valley, home to towering wax palms, the national tree of Colombia.

First-time visitors should be aware that Colombia’s climate varies greatly by region, so pack accordingly. While the country is much safer than it used to be, it’s still wise to stay informed about local conditions and avoid certain areas at night. Learning basic Spanish will go a long way, as English is not widely spoken outside of tourist areas.

Peru

- By Francesca of Homeroom Travel

Peru is one of the best countries in South America for first-timers. This amazing country has an array of things to do that are good for every type of traveller. From nature to delicious food and adventurous activities, you cannot go wrong with any stop in Peru. Plan to spend at least 10 days in Peru to see all it has to offer.

When visiting Peru, one of the most popular spots is Machu Picchu. Some people may brave the Inca Trail, but if hiking is not for you, visitors can also take the bus to visit this infamous site. Many people also like to visit Rainbow Mountain, which is also a strenuous hike.

For those more interested in exploring cities, you will not want to miss Cusco, once the capital of the Inca Empire. This is a great base to explore many of the ancient sites in the area, such as Maras and Moray.

Visitors will need to fly into Lima to access the other areas of Peru, so plan to spend some time exploring the current capital of Peru as well. Here visitors can explore sites such as the Government Palace, the Palace of the Archbishop, and the Cathedral of Lima. Other fun areas to visit include Urubamba, Lake Titicaca, Ollatambayo, and the Sechura Desert.

As first-time visitors to South America, make sure to brush up on basic Spanish vocabulary to be able to communicate in some areas. Additionally, make sure to have a bag that is harder to open to prevent pick-pockets. Also, know that transportation in Peru can be difficult so plan your transportation in advance of arriving.

Brazil

- By Danae of Danae Explore

With its year-round great weather, rich history and culture, and some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet, Brazil offers attractions for every type of traveller, providing a wide range of experiences within a single country.

If you're planning your first trip to Brazil, a two-week itinerary could start in Rio de Janeiro. Spend three days soaking in the vibrant atmosphere and immersing yourself in the Brazilian way of life. Be sure not to miss the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue and the stunning views from Sugarloaf Mountain.

After exploring Rio, consider driving to Paraty or Ilha Grande for four to five days. Both destinations offer not only beautiful beaches but also charming colonial architecture. If you're in the mood for more adventure, one of the northeastern beaches like Trancoso, Pipa, Porto de Galinhas, or Morro de São Paulo would be perfect. Alternatively, you could explore the unique landscapes of dunes and lagoons at Lençóis Maranhenses.

No trip to Brazil would be complete without diving into the Amazon Rainforest, where you could stay for three to four days. The jungle offers a truly immersive experience in nature, with opportunities to see incredible wildlife and learn about the region’s rich biodiversity.

If you're visiting in February, don’t miss the chance to experience Brazil's world-famous Carnival, held across the country with spectacular parades, vibrant music, and lively street parties.

Before visiting Brazil, check if you need a visa and ensure you're vaccinated, especially for yellow fever. I also recommend getting an eSIM to stay connected, making it easy to use Google Translate and navigate your adventure. But don’t worry: Brazilians love gringos (foreigners) and will go above and beyond to make sure you have a great time.

Argentina

- By Kim of Explore Your Bucket List

Argentina is a fantastic country to visit for first-time visitors to South America. It is easily accessible with multiple airports around the spacious country. Being spread out there are a wide range of places to visit including vibrant cities and gorgeous natural locations. This is also a great place for foodies, in particular for the world-renowned Argentine beef and wine.

The city of Buenos Aires is a logical place to start and is a fabulous city that is reminiscent of Paris. With spacious boulevards and loads of green space, this city is lovely for walking. There are markets for shopping, museums full of art and culture and the Recoleta cemetery which is fascinating to visit.

Visiting Iguazu Falls is a must-see for those interested in UNESCO Natural World Heritage sites. These falls are some of the most impressive in the world with more than 275 waterfalls spanning 2.7 kilometres (1.7 miles). The ability to get up close to the falls from boardwalks and pathways is really spectacular. Visitors who love to get the adrenaline pumping can enjoy a speed boat riding the rapids and getting up close to feel the thunder of the falls as the water crashes above. It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

In the far southern end is the city of Ushuaia. Here is the gateway to Patagonia and Antarctica. The small city is situated in the Tierra Del Fuego National Park with incredible mountains, lakes and park areas for hiking and water sports. And the Beagle Channel offers some great wildlife interactions where one can enjoy penguins, cormorants and sea lions in their natural habitats.

Because Argentina covers most of the southern part of South America, it is the perfect place to experience the unique culture, nature, and food of the continent.

Chile

- By Tess of Tess the Traveler

This South American country is easy to navigate for both new travellers and those just new to the region. Whether you love out-of-this-world nature, interesting and historic cities, or gorgeous coastal towns, Chile has something for everyone.

For those looking for unique nature landscapes, the Atacama Desert in Northern Chile is a must. This area is one of the driest in the world, and is home to unreal views and amazing opportunities for stargazing. First-time travellers can easily sign up for guided tours that will include transportation to and from San Pedro de Atacama, the most common base for visitors to the region.

Santiago, Chile’s capital is also more than worth a stop for a couple days. It’s full of interesting museums, has lots of restaurants and bars, and is an important place for learning about Chilean history and culture.

Just an hour or so from Santiago is Valparaiso, a small port city full of colour and street art. Viña del Mar, a popular beach city, is also under two hours from Santiago.

I spent 10 days in Chile, which was the perfect amount of time to see the highlights of the Atacama Desert, spend a couple days in the urban Santiago, and a couple days in neighbouring Valparaiso, but there’s plenty more to explore in Chile if you have more time.

Those looking for amazing hiking should head south to the Patagonia region (particularly to Torres del Paine) which is full of gorgeous mountains, volcanoes, fjords, and glaciers, while wine lovers shouldn’t miss visiting one of Chile’s wine regions—one of Chile’s most famous is Colchagua, in the central valley area south of Santiago.

Remember to hold on to your tourist card (Canadian and U.S. citizens can get it upon arrival) as you’ll need it to exit the country, and pack layers, as the weather can vary widely depending on the region in Chile and time of day.
