The Beauty Equation (2024)

During the European Renaissance, renowned artists and architects used an equation known as the "golden ratio" to map out their masterpieces. Thousands of years later, scientists adopted this mathematical formula to help explain why some people are considered beautiful...and others are not.

Dr. Kendra Schmid, an assistant professor of biostatistics, uses the golden ratio and 29 other measurements to study facial sex appeal. These measurements are calculated to determine a person's beauty on a scale of 1 to 10. What does she measure?

The Beauty Equation (1)A. First, Dr. Schmid measures the length and width of the face. Then, she divides the length by the width. The ideal result—as defined by the golden ratio—is roughly 1.6, which means a beautiful person's face is about 1 1/2 times longer than it is wide.

The Beauty Equation (2)B. Next, Dr. Schmid measures three segments of the face—from the forehead hairline to a spot between the eyes, from between the eyes to the bottom of the nose, and from the bottom of the nose to the bottom of the chin. If the numbers are equal, a person is considered more beautiful.

The Beauty Equation (3)C. Finally, statisticians measure other facial features to determine symmetry and proportion. On a perfect face, Dr. Schmid says the length of an ear is equal to the length the nose, and the width of an eye is equal to the distance between the eyes.

Most people score between 4 and 6, and Dr. Schmid says no one has ever been a perfect 10.

FAQs

What is the equation for beauty? ›

The Golden Ratio (or "Golden Section") is based on Fibonacci Numbers, where every number in the sequence (after the second) is the sum of the previous 2 numbers: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, ... We will see (below) how the Fibonnaci Numbers lead to the Golden Ratio: Φ = 1.618 033 ...

What is the most beautiful equation explained? ›

Euler's identity describes a counterclockwise half-turn along the unit circle in the complex plane. Viewed geometrically, Euler's identity is not remarkable. However, viewed algebraically, Euler's identity rightfully earns the title of "the most beautiful equation in math."

What is the math behind beauty Golden Ratio? ›

Some of the proportions they may discuss, as outlined by the Golden Ratio, include: A visually balanced face is approximately 1.618 times longer than it is wide. The distance from the top of the nose to the center of the lips should be around 1.618 times the distance from the center of the lips to the chin.

What is the mathematical measurement of beauty? ›

Spanning all the way back to ancient Greece, the Golden Ratio considers the proportion of 1:1.618 as appealing — whether it's in art or the human body. The closer your face comes to this ratio, the more beautiful you are.

The Female Equation is a series highlighting female change-makers within their fields, their entrepreneurial journeys as well as what they believe makes up the ultimate “Positive Equation.”

Does Euler's identity prove God? ›

According to Tobias Dantzig, in Number: The Language of Science, many 18th-century mathematicians regarded Euler's Identity as a "sort of mystic union, in which arithmetic was represented by 0 and 1, algebra by the symbol i, geometry by n, and analysis by the transcendental e." If a belief in God could be summed up in ...

What is the most powerful equation? ›

Einstein's E=mc² is the world's most famous equation. Simple as that. It is short, it is elegant, and it describes a phenomenon so crucial that everyone should know about it.

What is the golden rule of equations? ›

Golden Rule of Algebra: “Do unto one side of the equal sign as you will do to the other…” **Whatever you do on one side of the equal sign, you MUST do the same exact thing on the other side. If you multiply by -2 on the left side, you have to multiply by -2 on the other.

What is the formula for a beautiful face? ›

The Golden Ratio, roughly 1:1.618, is a principle from mathematics that describes ideal proportions. When applied to facial aesthetics, it offers a guideline for achieving facial balance and symmetry. Ideally proportioned facial features, according to this ratio, are often viewed as more appealing.

What is the Golden Ratio for a woman's body? ›

Results: There is a golden ratio in the distances between xiphoid to waist and waist to the abdominal crease that is close to 1:1.66, and the waist is at the junction of the upper 2/5th and lower 3/5th of the height from xiphoid to abdominal crease.

What is the rule of beauty? ›

Can you give a number to beauty? The answer is yes – it is roughly 1.62 and it is called the Golden Ratio of beauty! The Golden Ratio (also known as Phi, or the Fibonacci number) is the mathematical symmetry algorithm that underlies our perception of attractiveness.

Is there an equation for beauty? ›

A ratio of 1.618 to be exact. Referred to as the “Golden Ratio”, this is the exact ratio measurement thought to be needed to achieve symmetry and beauty. This applies to all things including nature, buildings, and the human body.

Can you make a universal equation for measuring beauty? ›

Called the golden ratio, this theory states there's a recurring proportion of arrangement that lends certain things their beauty. Represented as an equation: a/b = (a+b)/a, the golden ratio is all around us—conical sea shells, human faces, flower petals, buildings—we just don't always know we're looking at it.

What is the beauty in the eyes of math? ›

This beauty is seen in the harmony, patterns, and structures of numbers and forms – classical ideals of balance and symmetry. While experienced mathematicians can envision tangible representations of notations made on a page, mathematical beauty is not so well accessed by the non-mathematician.

What is beauty in math method? ›

The beauty of mathematics is experienced when the physical reality of objects are represented by mathematical models. Group theory, developed in the early 1800s for the sole purpose of solving polynomial equations, became a fruitful way of categorizing elementary particles—the building blocks of matter.

What is the Greek formula for beauty? ›

Can you give a number to beauty? The answer is yes – it is roughly 1.62 and it is called the Golden Ratio of beauty! The Golden Ratio (also known as Phi, or the Fibonacci number) is the mathematical symmetry algorithm that underlies our perception of attractiveness.

What is the formula of beauty in nature? ›

The “golden ratio” is a 1.618:1 mathematical ratio, and the number 1.618 is known as “phi.” Golden ratios can be found in shells, plants, flowers, and animals, among other places.

What is the math of a beautiful face? ›

The Golden Ratio (or 'ϕ') is perhaps the most popular mathematical theorem for beauty. It's considered the most aesthetically pleasing way to proportion an object. The ratio can be shortened, roughly, to 1.618.
