Texas: the state where you’re most likely to be killed by animals (2024)
To preface this post about how Texas is the state in which you’re most likely to be killed by an animal, we should note that death by animals is extremely unlikely in the United States.
Yet we couldn’t overlook the fact that Texas was shaded dark red for danger on every single map the Washington Post published yesterday about the states with the highest rates of mortality by dogs, bees, snakes, spiders and other bugs and mammals.
Using data from the CDC between 1999 and 2013, the Washington Post found that 356 Texans died by an animal’s hand (and by that,we mean hoof, stinger, claws— you get the picture).
That number is far higher than any other state; the second highest recorded number at 212 came from California. The numbers for California and Texas are predictably higher than that of other states — 85 percent of states posted numbers under 100 — because of their respective greater size and population.
That being said, the Washington Post noted that Texas’ number of animal deaths is still considereddisproportionate to its population when put againstthe national average.
As for which animals are most likely to be the ones that kill you, according to the CDC, “other mammals” accounted for as much as 36 percent of all animal-related deaths in the United States between 1999 and 2013.
The south central region containing Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma sees the most number of deaths within this category, which the Washington Post identified as mostly constituted by cows, horses and other farm animals.
But the number oneanimal killers on an annual basis are, perhaps unsurprisingly, bees, wasps and hornets. Roughly 58 die each year, mostly from anaphylactic shock.
The south central region containing Texas also had the second highest rates of deaths by snakes, dogs, spiders, scorpions, centipedes and other bugs.
The only region in which the south central United States was beat was the south Atlantic region, which containsthe third most likely place to get killed by an animal: Florida.
Where Are You Most Likely to Be Killed by An Animal? 1,844 Americans have been killed by animals since 2018 – and over 12% of those deaths occurred in Texas. In fact, Texas experienced the same amount of animal-related deaths as the 15 bottom-ranking states combined.
Each year, tens of thousands of shelter animals are euthanized in Texas, it is the number one state in the country for shelter deaths, according to a recent report.
Western cottonmouth snakes may have a shy temperament but are potentially one of the most deadly animals found in Texas. Also known as water moccasins, the western cottonmouth can potentially be found in any aquatic environment in Northern Central Texas including pools, lakes, rivers, or streams.
Mountain lions are the most formidable predator that remains in Texas and are capable of taking down the largest of prey, including steers, colts, sheep, elk and deer. Fortunately, mountain lions (and all our other predator species) occur at extremely low densities compared to their prey.
In 2020, Faunalytics reported that the countries with the largest number of slaughtered cows and chickens are China, the United States, and Brazil. Concerning pigs, they are slaughtered by far the most in China, followed by the United States, Germany, Spain, Vietnam, and Brazil.
Problem. California has now become the #1 State for most animals euthanized in shelters in America and the #1 State in the homeless animals population.
No person may kill or attempt to injure a dangerous wild animal (African or Asiatic lion, tiger, leopard, cheetah, hyena, bear, elephant, wolf, or rhinoceros, or any subspecies or hybrid of these animals) that is held in captivity in this state or that is released from captivity in this state for the purpose of being ...
Some of the most commonly found wild animals in Texas include white-tailed deer, coyotes, bobcats, and armadillos. Texas is home to a number of endangered species, such as the red wolf, the ocelot, and the Houston toad.
The goats that are to be cut on the following days are kept in the same place where their fellows were cut, skinned and hung in front of their eyes. They kick and cry loudly for days and nights before the sacrifice, but once the killing begins they go eeringly quiet.

Penal Code 42.092 of the State of Texas law states that a person must have the owner's consent to kill the animal (exceptions to prosecution are provided in Section 42.092(e)(1)). It is clear that a “stray” dog or cat either has no owner or that the person who shoots the animal did not get the owner's consent.
