Texas and Mexico share 1,254 miles of common border and are joined by 28 international bridges and border crossings.

In April 2024, the U.S. Border Patrol recorded 128,900 encounters between ports of entry along the southwest border. In April, encounters between ports of entry along the southwest border were 6% lower than in March 2024 and 30% lower than April 2023.

Busiest US-Mexico land border crossing points

San Ysidro is the busiest crossing by far, followed by El Paso. Most of the the annual crossings are made by personal vehicles and their passengers, and pedestrians.

The interior border checkpoint located 20 miles south of Falfurrias, Texas is one of 18 permanent interior checkpoints in Texas located 25-75 miles north of the Mexican border. Upon entering the checkpoint drivers and passengers are subject to questioning, canine searches, and possible detainment.

The 1,951 mile U.S.-Mexico border is the busiest in the world. Each year the our southern border allows in more than 300 million people, approximately 90 million cars, and 4.3 million truck crossings. Since the implementation of NAFTA, the number of commercial vehicles crossing the border has increased by 41 percent.

The United States borders to Canada and Mexico have been temporarily closed to all non-essential travel (i.e., tourism or recreational in nature). The borders will remain open for individuals crossing the borders for work, necessary medical care, or official business.

Passenger vehicle lanes are open 24 hours, seven days a week. Commercial vehicle lanes are in operation from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday, and 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM on Saturdays.

June 20, 2024 – TFC Executive Director Mike Novak reported Thursday, June 20, 2024, that 33.50 miles of the border wall program had been completed as of June 14, 2024. Active construction is underway at separate locations across Cameron, Starr, Zapata, Webb, Maverick, and Val Verde Counties.
