I’ve been continuing to dive into John Templeton’s Discovering The Laws Of Life, and this morning, I randomly opened to Week Twenty: Law C, “Happiness Comes From Spiritual Wealth Not Material Wealth.” I find it highly encouraging, yet frustrating at the same time, that these “laws” that I have been exploring, experiencing, and gaining a better understanding and been accessible to all for a long time–it may seem like more people are discovering the benefits of aligning their spirit, mind, body, and money, but the truth is people like Templeton have been writing and sharing these messages for a long time.
Two paragraphs jumped out at me that I felt I should share in today’s note:
“It is easy to determine how wealthy we are materially. To determine how wealth we are spiritually, we need to look at our lives. What are our relationships like? Have we learned how to accept others for who and what they are without reservation? Have we learned how to forgive and forget wrongs done to us? Do we value life–all life and the many forms it assumes? The answers to these questions give us a fair estimate of our spiritual wealth.”
And
“Spiritual wealth leads to true happiness because with it, we have a resource that will never run dry. Material wealth is dependent on many factors that sometimes are outside our control. Spiritual wealth is totally within our control. We are the ones who determine how much or how little we have of it in our lives. If we take inventory and find ourselves lacking in spiritual wealth, it is up to us to draw on that great resource within us to replenish the supply. We have within us all we need to make our lives prosperous and happy; we have the ability to love and to be loved; we have the ability to enjoy life to the fullest no matter what is going on around us.”
If I can only pull out one thought of all of the great wisdom Templeton shares, it would be,
“We have within us all we need to make our lives prosperous and happy.”

Justin Castelli, CFP®Learning how to accept others for who they are eliminates a lot of stress and frustration in life.Changing ourselves is difficult.Changing others is extremely difficult.Even if you do want to change them, the first step is usually to accept them as they currently are and is to create an environment in which they feel safe and can open their minds.Dr. Donald Moine

Nicely done my friend. Spiritual wealth has been examined by philosophers throughout the centuries. It is what determines our “life satisfaction index”. As important a construct of happiness, it is hard to understand the concept literally. And the words don’t help. That is because material wealth measures abundance and quantity. Spiritual wealth is a state of being, subjective to the individual and I think, binary.
