Techstars: The Cliff (2024)

Just a few days after wrapping up my Techstars experience, I'm still buzzing with excitement...balanced by a bit of fatigue. If you've been following my LinkedIn journey, you'll know that this accelerator has made an indelible mark on me and is actively shaping the path forward for Tromml.

My perspective is somewhat unique. I've worn multiple hats in the startup world—running support programs, working as a fractional resource, being a full-time employee, and now, proudly taking on the role of a founder. Not many CEOs can claim to have run an accelerator of their own before diving headfirst into entrepreneurship, let alone having had the chance to collaborate with hundreds of startups along the way.

It feels like just yesterday when I walked into Thom Ruhe 's office at NC IDEA and told him, "I love what I do here, but it's time for me to go do the work." I had a deep passion for supporting startups, but it was high time I rolled up my sleeves and started building companies.

Since then, it's been a whirlwind journey. I've put in countless hours, both as a full-time employee and in fractional roles at various companies, learning invaluable lessons about what to do and what to avoid as a founder. Along the way, I even started a small business venture, Auroraflow, with my incredible wife. Yet, Tromml—this is where I truly belong.

People often ask me, 'What was the most impactful part of your Techstars experience?' To be honest, it's challenging to pinpoint a single aspect because the whole experience has been profoundly impactful. It's an accelerator, and it becomes obvious why it's called an accelerator. Witnessing our company's rapid growth in just 10 weeks has been nothing short of remarkable.

I specifically chose Techstars Austin because I'd heard glowing reviews about Amos Schwartzfarb , the managing director. Little did I know that this would be my last chance to work with him, making my acceptance into the program even more humbling.

The decision to join Techstars Austin wasn't taken lightly; it was driven by the exceptional reputation of the team and the managing director. Securing a spot among the elite <1% of accepted applicants wasn't just a validation of our startup's vision; it was a surge of inspiration that reignited our passion and reaffirmed our unwavering belief, both in our mission and in ourselves.

As I entered the program, I had certain expectations, but Techstars Austin exceeded them on all fronts. It wasn't just about networking; it felt like becoming part of a tight-knit family. This opportunity was about more than professional growth; it nurtured personal transformation and fundamentally reshaped my view of myself as a CEO.

I now fully grasp why 'The Power of The Network' was a recurring theme throughout Foundercon—it's truly more powerful than I could have imagined. If I were to distill this experience into one key element, it would undoubtedly be the power of the network. In the unpredictable world of startups, having a robust support system is like having a guiding star—it illuminates even the darkest paths.

One of the most profound revelations was the depth of care and dedication exhibited by the Techstars staff, the Operators in Residence (OIRs), and the mentors. My heartfelt thanks to Andy Ambrose (my ride or die), Pete Rung , Ezinne Udezue , Scott Kosch , Jing-ta Chow , and everyone else who played a part. I'm excited to continue our journey together.

I didn't, however, anticipate the profound impact my cohort would have on me. We didn't just form connections; we forged friendships that will last a lifetime. We've become a close-knit community of entrepreneurs, united by an unwavering determination to create something meaningful and to support each other when times get tough.

As I wrapped up the program, we were introduced to the concept of 'the cliff'—the moment when startups must step into the real world independently. While I haven't reached that juncture yet, I'm standing at the edge, ready and prepared. The wisdom, support, and growth I've experienced at Techstars Austin have armed my team and me with the confidence to tackle future challenges and seize opportunities with unwavering determination.

My journey through Techstars Austin serves as a testament to the transformative power of entrepreneurship. It's a reminder that even in the face of uncertainty, challenges, and occasional setbacks, our dreams are worth pursuing.

If you have, or are thinking about, participating in an accelerator...I hope this letter resonates with you, inspires you, and reinforces the belief that with the right network and unwavering self-belief, extraordinary achievements are not only possible but well within reach.
