Strange Coins are a form of currency used to purchase items from Xur during his visits to the Tower.
How to Obtain Strange Coins
Strange Coins can be obtainedby completing the Weekly Heroic Strikes (level 22will grant the player three, level 26 six, or level 28 nine), and occasionally drop during Public Events and Crucible matches. You can also sometimes grab them during Weekly Nightfall Strikes, completing raid sections, decrypting Decoherent Engrams, finding loot chests and completing a Queen's bounty.

They're also found in the loot chests beneath the Prison of Elders.
Need Strange Coins quickly?
Need to grind Coins? Your best bet is to get to work with more than one Guardian.
Although there's a limit on the number of Coins each Guardian can earn from Strikes each week, there's nothing stopping you from popping them in the vault and moving them between characters. This enables you to earn a collective 27 Strange Coins a week playing Strikes.
