Robocalls

Robocalls are automated phone calls with prerecorded messages. These calls have increased in recent years because technology has made it cheap and easy for robocallers to make calls from anywhere in the world while hiding their identities by displaying fake Caller ID information.

To learn more visit theFederal Trade Commission(FTC) or theFederal Communications Commission(FCC).

Stop annoying and unwanted calls. Verizon has four ways to help you block calls on your home phone. If you haven’t already, sign up for:

  • Call Block
  • Caller ID
  • Anonymous Call Rejection
  • Caller ID/Call Waiting

Verified Caller ID

Stop Unwanted & Annoying Home Phone Calls (2)

A “[V]” may appear at the beginning of some incoming calls on your caller ID, voicemail logs or TV screen. This will indicate that the call is coming from a phone number where Verizon is able to verify the calling number.

Scammers and other bad actors often use spoofing to alter the name or number on your Caller ID to get you to answer their calls. To help you identify a potentially fraudulent call, we’ve enhanced our Caller ID feature. You will see a “[V]” when the caller’s telephone provider has confirmed that the call is coming from an authentic telephone number that has not been spoofed. This “[V]” symbol will appear on the phone screen, TV screen, call log or voicemail when you’ve received a Verified call.

This does not mean that calls without a “[V]” are scam calls as Verizon can only verify a call if the caller is using a network that has the same capabilities as Verizon’s network. Also, Verizon can not guarantee the intent of callers that are verified. Always be wary of unknown calls, but this is another tool to give you more control over the calls you answer.

Call Filter

This service is automatically turned on but if you like, you can turn it off at any time by following the steps below.

  1. Log into My Verizon
  2. Go to the Manage your phone
  3. Scroll down and click on Call Filter

Please note that Call Filter may accidentally block wanted calls. If this happens you can report blocking errors.

Spam Alerts

  • Introducing Spam Alerts

  • We get lots of complaints about unwanted computerized calls, and we get it - no one likes robocalls. To help you identify them, we've added a newSpam Alertsfeature to your home phone's Caller ID. Your Caller ID will show "SPAM?" before caller's name that have been identified* as a possible unsolicited call.

Stop Unwanted & Annoying Home Phone Calls (3)

*A complex and always-improving algorithm is used to determine which calls match the SPAM criteria. While we're focused on identifying and alerting you to these types of calls, you may still receive unsolicited calls from spammers/scammers as these calls will not be blocked automatically. You still choose which calls you want to answer and which ones you don't.

To report numbers that you believe should be listed as spam, or incorrectly labeled as such, please visitspamalerts.verizon.com.

Call Blocking

These calls are terminated in the network and never reach your device. Blocked calls are not directed to voicemail.

There are other online call blocking services and call blocking devices that block unwanted calls. Check your local retail store, search online, or you can purchase theCPR Call Blocker V5000 Verizon Accessories Store.

For unwanted cell calls, consider using an anti-robocall tool likeVerizon Caller Name IDto get alerts on incoming spam calls and easily report and block unwanted numbers on your mobile phone.

    Frequently asked questions

    • Robocalls are automated phone calls with prerecorded messages. These calls have increased in recent years because technology has made it cheap and easy for robocallers to make calls from anywhere in the world while hiding their identities by displaying fake Caller ID information. To learn more visit theFederal Trade Commission(FTC) or theFederal Communications Commission(FCC).

    • All calls with prerecorded telemarketing sales messages are illegal unless you agreed to be called. Some non-marketing robocalls (such as political and charitable calls to landiline phones) are authorized by law in most states, even if they are unwanted.

    • We stop many robocalls before they can get to you. We monitor our networks to detect spikes in suspicious calls, and then work with law enforcement and with other telephone companies to shut down illegal robocallers. Verizon also works with other telephone companies and industry standards organizations to develop new technologies to stop robocalls, and we support federal legislation to better go after the source – the scammers who make these calls.

      • Hang up the phone, Do NOT interact with the caller, Do NOT call back in order to be taken off the list – calling back can cause you to get more calls because the scammers know you are a real person
      • If you do end up in a conversation with a scammer, never reveal any personal information such as passwords, social security numbers, or account numbers
      • If you are not sure whether a caller is a scammer or not, hang up immediately, remember that legitimate callers do not call asking for personal information
      • Report the call to theFTCatDoNotCall.gov or ReportFraud.ftc.gov
        • Information to include: time and date of call, the number that appeared on your Caller ID screen, your telephone number, and a description of the message
        • You normally won't see immediate action, but the FTC's complaint database is important – it helps government agencies and companies go after illegal robocallers and come up with new ways to attack the problem
      • Some call blocking applications likeVerizon Call Filterwill allow you to report calls to improve the accuracy of the service
