Overview[]

Spartan Rage is filled up by dealing and taking damage, most notably while performing R3 finishers when enemies are stunned. It is activated by pressing the L3 and R3 buttons simultaneously, allowing Kratos or Atreus to enter an empowered state.

When Kratos is Enraged, his fists will appear to be on fire, his muscles and veins become more prominent, and his eyes emit a yellowish glow. He will also let out a mighty roar and see red.

In God of War (2018)[]

While in Spartan Rage, the Rage meter drains over time as well as when damage is dealt or taken; damage taken depletes Rage instead of Health. Kratos can exit Rage at will, by pressing L3 and R3 simultaneously, at the cost of additional Rage. The Rage meter must be fully charged before it can be used (if max rage was increased, the required amount stays the same, indicated by a split on the bar).

While Enraged, Kratos fights bare-handed and will chase down enemies as he pummels them with swift, aggressive and devastating flurries of punches and haymakers. He can also send enemies tumbling back with jump attacks, deliver earth-shaking stomps, and hurl huge boulders that explode on contact. Kratos also recovers Health proportional to the damage he delivers to foes.

Damage inflicted by all Rage Attacks is affected by the Strength stat, as well as any Armor or Enchantment perks associated with bare-handed damage.

When his son Atreus is in danger during a fight, Kratos activates the Spartan Rage in a few scenes.

Fury[]

Kratos begins the game with Fury. This version of Spartan Rage is the very same version he used, prior to Fimbulwinter. While Fury is active, Kratos will have access to all of the Rage attacks he could use before, except for Spartan Stomp and Spartan Surge, which have been replaced with grabs instead.

The Blade of Olympus deals incredibly high damage, and the Rage bar depletes very slowly, making it the longest lasting Rage ability. After completing Valhalla’s main story, Legacy is unlocked for use in New Game+ in the main game.

Atreus[]

As Kratos' son, Atreus inherited the power of Spartan Rage from him. However, during his early life, he would fall ill whenever he became too angry, signified by physical weakness and a hacking cough. In God of War (2018), Atreus activates Spartan Rage for the first time when Modi is about to kill Kratos; Due to the circ*mstances of Kratos hiding his godly heritage from him, he would fall into a deeply feverish, catatonic state that threatened to kill him without the assistance of Freya.

In God of War Ragnarök, Atreus unconsciously uses Spartan Rage and transforms into a bear form, attacking his own father Kratos after Fenrir's death. He later learns to properly channel and manifest his Spartan Rage after learning of the prophecy of Kratos's death and him joining the Aesir as 'Loki'. Upon activation, Atreus transforms into a wolf form, and forgoes bow and spell combat to instead attack enemies with powerful bites, inflicting large amounts of Stun where he can then tear the heads off of most foes. During Ragnarök, Atreus is able to transform into a bear form again with full control of it. In this form, he attacks enemies with powerful claws.

Trivia[]

  • This and the Rage of Sparta is the only rage power not bestowed upon him by Greek gods and/or Titans.
    • It is likely that the reason why Kratos no longer needs outside powers to tap into his rage is because whereas before Kratos was always angry and required the magic/weapons granted to him to properly focus his anger into empowering him, and by the time he has settled in the Norse world, his emotional control has improved significantly, allowing him to channel his anger without any need for magical assistance. This is further proven by how in God of War Ragnarök, after having further matured and continued to train over the course of 3 years, Kratos was able to manifest his anger into three forms that symbolizes his growth in character: Fury symbolizes Kratos' remaining capacity for brutal wrath, Valor symbolizes Kratos' improved mindset in that he only draws upon some of his rage to restore lost strength rather than letting his rage overwhelm him, and Wrath symbolizes Kratos' ability to release a calculated burst of his anger to unleash powerful attacks with his weapons, Wrath's nature being a feat Kratos could not do in the 2018 game.
  • Kratos can activate it instantaneously and for a much longer time if he is truly enraged, such as when Atreus was threatened by Baldur or the Dark Elf King. This is similar to when Deimos was killed by Thanatos and Kratos gained infinite Thera's Bane for the rest of their fight.
  • The flames produced by Kratos in this state seem to be real, as when he first activated the Spartan Rage with his fight with Baldur, he set several nearby tree roots on fire.
  • The Rage variants Valor and Wrath in Ragnarök could be fully developed forms of abilities he displayed in the previous game.
    • During Kratos' first fight with Baldur, he activated a burst of rapid healing twice, seemingly at the cost of his stamina.
    • During the fight against Magni and Modi, Kratos entered a burst of rage and used the Leviathan Axe to deliver a decisive blow that killed Magni instantly and terrified Modi.
      • In both instances, Kratos was under the pressure of protecting his son from imminent danger; this thematically fits with the consistent theme that Valor and Wrath respectively were unlocked after reuniting with Atreus and having their father-son relationship develops.
  • Both of Kratos' Spartan Rage options unlocked in God of War Ragnarök become available when he reunites with Atreus after a period of separation.
  • Kratos can fill up Spartan Rage by attacking Hel's Bramble with the Leviathan Axe.
  • Spartan Rage "Legacy" is the first Rage variation that allows Kratos to summon a weapon.
