Soundproofing Existing Walls - Soundproofing Products Australia (2024)

Whether you’re trying to get some much-needed sleep, working in your home office, or simply wanting to drown out the noises of your noisy next-door neighbors, You may be wondering if there is a way to soundproofing existing walls. Nothing is more irritating than attempting to enjoy some peace and quiet only to be forcibly interrupted by the sounds of commotion coming from another room.

Obviously the ideal case would be to demolish your current walls and replace them with soundproofing materials to eliminate the undesirable noise; but of course, demolition may not be practical. There are a number of reasons why you might be unable to remove the plasterboard (drywall) or wall covering, including:

  • You may be a renter who is unable to participate in significant building projects because you are a tenant.
  • It’s possible that your budget won’t allow you to dismantle and rebuild the walls.
  • You’re concerned about the potential for demolition to cause damage.
  • You might not want to cope with the clutter and work that a large building project entails.

Whatever the reason, if you want to soundproof your existing walls without removing the existing plasterboard there’s good news: Soundproofing Existing Walls is not only possible, but often it is cheaper and more effective than tearing the wall down. There are a number of non-invasive procedures that can successfully reduce the amount of unwanted noise that goes through the walls.

Our Solution to soundproofing Existing walls

1. Mass Loaded Vinyl

When it comes to reducing sound that passes through a wall, floor, ceiling, door or window, adding more mass to the structure is possibly the most effective strategy. Perhaps the best and most economical way to add more mass to an existing wall is to add a layer of Mass Loaded Vinyl over the existing plasterboard or wall covering. Mass Loaded Vinyl is a very high density, very thin sheet of vinyl that has exceptional sound blocking properties. The heavier the product the better the soundproofing. I have attached a test report that shows you the sound reduction at different frequencies.
