Is Smarthistory a reliable source? ›

Yes! Smarthistory is a leading OER (open educational resource) and is designed for use in schools, museums, and at home.

Smarthistory is an independent not-for-profit organization and the official partner of the Khan Academy for art history. It is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Steven Zucker is co-founder and executive director of Smarthistory. Previously, Steven was dean of art and history at Khan Academy. He was chair of history of art and design at Pratt Institute where he strengthened enrollment and lead renewal of curriculum across the Institute.

They hire professional historians to write and edit their articles. These articles may not be as heavily peer-reviewed as articles written in professional journals, but History.com is a reliable free source.

Khan Academy is not an accredited school and work done on the site does not count towards a diploma or degree program. Khan Academy is best used as a supplement to your normal schooling, whether that is homeschooling or a traditional school.
