Recommended: The Personality of Sherlock Holmes Essay
The stories of Sherlock Holmes provide two fictional characters that are virtually polar opposites:Holmes and Watson. Holmes is the observant, deceptive, know-it-all detective, and Watson is his somewhat unobservant, quiet, and intelligent assistant. Many may find one of the two somewhat relatable. In my case, that relatable character would be Watson. Therefore, my personality and actions are more similar to Watson’s than they are to Holmes’s. I am more like Watson considering as I am a loyal friend, I have emotions, and I accept that I do not know everything. One way that I am similar to Watson is that I have been a loyal friend to several people. The prime example of this would be his performance in The Dying Detective by Hardwick. “Oh, …show more content… He experiences many different feelings. This quote establishes that Watson feels love and respect for his wife, unlike Holmes who doesn’t seem to feel anything. In The Scandal of Bohemia by Doyle, Watson demonstrates that his social and emotional life dominates over his professional life. “I had seen little of Holmes lately. My marriage had drifted us away from each other. My own complete happiness, and the home-centered interests which rise up around the man who first finds himself master of his own establishment, were sufficient enough to absorb all my attention, while Holmes, who loathed every form of society with his whole Bohemian soul, remained in our lodgings on Baker Street, buried among his old books, and alternating from week to week between cocaine and ambition, the drowsiness of the drug to the fierce energy of his own keen nature” (Doyle, pg. 1). This reveals that Watson has been absorbed in his marriage, which is an event full of emotion and care, while Holmes does drugs and sits in his office chasing down criminals. I myself am rather sensitive and feel many different emotions. I also put people before profession when I took off of school to visit my father and grandmother (at different times) when they were in the hospital Their lives are more important.To put family over profession is to put love over greed. He takes it, knowing it is true. Although I am a terrible perfectionist, I understand that I am far from perfect and all-knowing. I, too, am well aware of my own ignorance and the ignorance of humankind as a whole. No one person can know everything, and those who think they do are by far the most ignorant of all. Even though we may like to think we know it all, the truly intelligent understand that they do
