Riddles With Answers And Explanations
1) Riddle: Forward I am heavy, backward I am not, what am I?
Answer: Ton.
Explanation: A ton is a heavy weight and when the word is spelled backwards it literally reads 'not'.
2) Riddle: What runs out when you push it?
Answer: Your luck.
Explanation: A play on the saying, 'don't push your luck'.
3) Riddle: What animal has two feet but can't walk?
Answer: A snake (that is 24+ inches long).
Explanation: 24 inches is two feet, so as long as the snake is this long it has 'two feet'.
4) Riddle: What is full of holes but still holds water?
Answer: A sponge.
Explanation: Pretty much what it says on the tin, a sponge is full of holes and holds water!
5) Riddle: What building has the most stories?
Answer: The library.
Explanation: A play on the words 'storeys', as in floors of a building, and 'stories', as in what you get in books. A library is full of the second type of stories.
6) Riddle: What is there one of in every corner and two of in every room?
Answer: The letter 'o'.
Explanation: The word 'corner' has one 'o' in; the word 'room' has two 'o's in.
7) Riddle: I'm full of holes but strong as steel, what am I?
Answer: A chain.
Explanation: Again, pretty much what it says on the tin, chains are made of steel and are full of holes.
8) Riddle: What runs around a horse but never moves?
Answer: A fence.
Explanation: Horses are typically kept in their fields by fences. These fences run around the edge of the fields (and the horses inside them) whilst at the same time never moving.
9) Riddle: Someone's mother has four sons. The first is called North. The second is called South. The third is called East. What is the fourth called?
Answer: Someone.
Explanation: A play on the word' someone'. When the riddle says 'someone's mother' it literally means 'the mother of the boy called Someone'.
10) Riddle: What goes up but never comes down?
Answer: Your age.
Explanation: Again, fairly self-explanatory, your age goes up but never goes down. You are as young today as you will ever be!
11) Riddle: What disappears as soon as you say its name?
Answer: Silence.
Explanation: Just try to silently say 'silence'!
12) Riddle: What belongs to you but is used by others when they see you?
Answer: Your name.
Explanation: Another simple once you know it one, your name is yours but others will use it when they want to attract your attention.

Answer: A candle.
Explanation: Providing you actually use it, candles will melt as they burn and therefore shrink as they age.

Answer: A hole.
Explanation: A hole is made by taking away what was there before.
15) Riddle: What do you call a cow with no legs?
Answer: Ground beef.
Explanation: A punny one. A cow is beef; take away its legs and it will be on the ground. Ground beef.
16) Riddle: What question can you never answer yes to truthfully?
Answer: Are you asleep?
Explanation: If you say 'yes' then you are awake and therefore are lying. Some people talk in their sleep I suppose, but we'll leave that to one side.
17) Riddle: What gets wetter the more it dries?
Answer: A towel.
Explanation: A play on what's being dried. The towel is drying you and in the process it is getting wetter.
18) Riddle: What is always coming but never arrives?
Answer: Tomorrow.
Explanation: You are always approaching the next day (i.e. tomorrow) but when it arrives it is no longer 'tomorrow' but instead it is 'today'.
19) Riddle: Poor people have it, rich people need it and if you eat it you'll die, what is it?
Answer: Nothing.
Explanation: Okay, so there might be quite a lot of things that rich people need, and that poor people have, but for the purposes of the riddle we'll ignore that. Either way, if you eat nothing you will die.
20) Riddle: What is wrong with this sentence?

Answer: There are two 'the's before 'supermarket'
Explanation: A visual trick really. The use of two lines makes it easy to miss the repetition of 'the'.
21) Riddle: What is stronger than steel but can't handle the sun?
Answer: Ice.
Explanation: In the extreme cold temperatures of a sunless world ice would be incredibly strong, but introducing the sun's heat into the equation can turn it into a puddle.
22) Riddle: A bat and a ball cost 1.10. The bat costs one dollar more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?
Answer: 5.
Explanation: 105-5=100, 105+5=100. This one is easy to slip up on but quite simple once you get it.
23) Riddle: 5+5+5=550, this equation is not wrong but only because it is missing a single straight line. What should it say?
Answer: 545+5=550.
Explanation: By adding a diagonal line to the first '+' you can turn it into a '4'.
24) Riddle: I had £3. My mum gives me £10 while my dad gives me £30. My aunt and uncle give me £100. I had another £5. How much money did I have?
Answer: £8.
Explanation: The crucial thing here is the use of past tense. The riddle says 'how much money DID you have?', so you can discount the money you have only just now been given and simply add 3 to 5.
