Simple syrups are a great way to sweeten your co*cktails with minimal change in flavour. A traditional simple syrup consists of one part sugar and one part water—a 1:1 ratio—but a rich simple syrup has a 2:1 ratio with two parts sugar for every one part water, resulting in a more condensed sweetness. When it comes to mouthfeel, the rich simple syrup is more viscous than simple syrup and creates a thicker texture for your co*cktails.
The standard is to use white granulated sugar for simple syrup to create a more neutral sweetener, but other types of sugar work as well, such as palm or demerara to enhance the depth of flavour.
INGREDIENTS
- ½ cup water
- 1 cup sugar
These are only placeholder measurements—any 2:1 ratio will work just fine!
DIRECTIONS
- Add sugar and water to a saucepan over medium-high heat.
- Simmer and stir until the sugar has fully dissolved.
- Let cool at room temperature.
- Transfer to an airtight container (glass works best).
- Refrigerate.
