Revolut fees and charges [2024 guide] (2024)

Revolut®¹ offers a good range of 3 personal account types, and 4 business account plans for US customers, allowing you to pick the perfect match for your transaction needs.

The features and fees you get with your Revolut account depend on the account tier you hold - picking the right plan can mean keeping down your overall costs and accessing some great perks and benefits too.

This guide walks through Revolut fees for all account types, and also touches on another option for comparison - Wise. Wise is a non-bank alternative with flexible multi-currency accounts, mid-market exchange rates and easy ways to send, spend, hold and receive foreign currencies with low fees².

Revolut fee overview

The Revolut fees you pay will depend on the plan you pick. Standard plan holders pay no monthly fee, but have a relatively limited range of features and no-fee services.

Customers who choose to upgrade to Premium or Metal pay a monthly fee but can get a higher amount of no-fee transactions every month, as well as a range of other perks.

Here’s an overview of the key Revolut fees you should know about - read the Revolut account terms and conditions carefully to learn more.

What's Revolut's currency exchange rate?

Revolut currency exchange fees effectively vary based on the account plan you have. Revolut customers can convert currency using the interbank rate - also known as the mid-market exchange rate - up to their plan limit.

Once you’ve exhausted your plan limit, a fair usage fee of 0.5% kicks in⁶.

How do Revolut fees work on weekends?

Revolut currency conversion can cost more at weekends. From 5 pm on a Friday, to 6 pm on a Sunday, international currency exchange markets aren’t available. Because of this, Revolut has an extra 1% fee to convert currencies for all plan types.

Are there different fees for Standard and Premium Revolut accounts?

Yes. As we’ve seen, the costs of maintaining and using a Revolut account depends on the plan you have. Standard accounts have no monthly fee, but have lower no-fee transaction limits compared to Premium or Metal accounts.

That can mean that if you have a Standard plan and transact with Revolut regularly, you end up paying more than you’d have to if you upgraded your account. The key is to work out whether the difference in the monthly fee is worth the additional no-fee transactions and the extra benefits you can unlock.

Fee comparison: Standard vs Premium accounts

Here’s a quick look at how this might work. We’ve imagined 2 Revolut account holders who transact in the same way for 1 given month, with some example costs that would apply to different account types:

PlanRevolut StandardRevolut Premium
Monthly feeNo fee9.99 USD
Withdraw 400 USD at out of network ATMs in the USNo feeNo fee
Spend 1,000 USD overseas during an international tripNo feeNo fee
Withdraw 1,000 in foreign currency during your international trip

Currency exchange fair usage fee: 0.5% * 1,000= 5 USD

Out of network ATM usage: 1,000 USD * 2%= 20 USD

No currency exchange fair usage fee

Out of network ATM usage: 200 USD * 2%= 8 USD

Total Revolut fees in this month25 USD17.99 USD

In this example, the Standard plan customer could potentially end up paying more than the Premium customer.

Bear in mind this is for illustration only, and the fees you pay will depend on how you use your account more generally.

Are the fees different for Revolut business accounts?

Business account fees from Revolut are different to personal fees. You’ll be able to pick from account plans called Basic, Grow, Scale or Enterprise.

Enterprise plans are entirely customizable, so we’ve not included them in our Revolut business fee comparison. As with personal accounts, you can pick the plan that works best for your needs based on the number and type of transactions you’ll be making.

Can Revolut fees be avoided or reduced?

You won’t be able to avoid Revolut fees entirely, but as we’ve seen, the key is to pick the account plan that best matches your transaction needs.

A Standard plan may be enough if you don’t use your account often, but upgrading might make sense if you find you’re transacting with Revolut a lot.

Or, as an alternative, take a look at some different services and account providers to see if any others have account pricing and plans which work better for your specific needs.

How do Revolut fees compare to other providers?

Digital account providers like Revolut are often cheaper to use overall compared to banks, as they have lower overheads and are able to pass these low costs on to their customers.

They’ve also been built to meet specific customer needs, which can mean they price services more competitively for things like international payments and transactions - which tend to attract fairly high bank fees.

However, Revolut’s pricing structure can be pretty complicated to navigate with different monthly and transaction fees depending on your account type. Whether it’s the most competitive option out there for your specific needs really depends on the type and volume of transactions you’ll make.

It’s worth comparing Revolut against some other non-bank services, like Wise to see which suits you best.

Wise has account options for both personal and business customers in the US, with straightforward pricing, transparent service fees, and no ongoing charges or minimum balance requirements.
