Retroactive Pay Increases Coming Soon - California Faculty Association (2024)

CSU management continues to implement the terms of the reopener agreement we achieved earlier this year during our hard-fought bargaining and job actions. Based on management’s timeline, retroactive pay increases for the 2023-24 year should be appearing in faculty paychecks for the May pay period.

For the 2023-24 year, faculty will receive:

  • A 5-percent General Salary Increase (GSI) for all faculty, retroactive to July 1, 2023, that is expected to take effect for the May 2024 pay period appearing on our June 1, 2024, paychecks.
  • Raising the floor for faculty in Ranges A and B retroactive to July 1, 2023, that is expected to take effect for the May 2024 pay period appearing on our June 1, 2024, paychecks. The salary increase to raise the floor will be applied after the 5-percent GSI.

Some faculty may also be eligible for a 2.65-percent Service Salary Increase or a Department Chair pay increase (see Article 31).

“It is imperative that CSU management pay faculty the full amount owed to us and that they do it in a timely manner,” said CFA President Charles Toombs. “Faculty need and deserve an accurate paycheck, and a delay in payment will negatively impact their livelihood.”

The retroactive payments may come in several different checks of differing amounts. Additionally, faculty may experience other pay changes (a promotion, a range elevation, or an SSI) that will change the monthly pay rate.

For the coming 2024-25 year, faculty will receive:

  • A 5-percent GSI for all faculty effective July 1, 2024, contingent on the state not cutting base funding to the CSU. We’re monitoring 2024-25 state budget conversations between the governor and legislators, and so far, everything is on track for the raises to be issued.
  • Raising the floor for contingent faculty in Range A by $3,000 effective July 1, 2024. The salary increase to raise the floor will be applied after the 5-percent GSI for 2024-25.
  • A 2.65-percent Service Salary Increase for eligible faculty will be paid on the faculty member’s anniversary of hire in 2024 (for most faculty this is in August).

Use this salary flowchart for an estimate on how the salary increases apply to you.

Processing faculty pay is a complicated interaction between the Chancellor’s Office, the campuses, and the State Controller’s Office, and we appreciate the efforts of support staff in payroll and other departments to make sure faculty are paid as soon as possible.

However, given the history of payroll delays and errors made by the CSU administration, it is vital that faculty know what we are owed in salary as well as what we are actually paid and when. Review your salary information and ensure you are receiving the correct raises. If you have any further questions or concerns, please contact your campus payroll office.
