How to reply when your request is rejected? ›

Show some gratitude. Thank the employer for letting you know their decision and for their time and consideration. Demonstrate your genuine interest in the position. Express your disappointment, but keep it brief and maintain a positive tone.

Again, make sure to show your appreciation, but let them know it's all good and you're not upset. Rather than sending a long, drawn-out reply, you want to relay the message of something like, “it's good... I'm good, don't worry about it, it was nice meeting you,” Ouimet suggests.

Here's a sample response you could use when following up after being rejected. In addition to thanking the other person for their time and expressing gratitude for the opportunity, you should do two things: State your interest in being considered for future opportunities, and ask for feedback on how you can improve.

Be honest: Share your feelings gently but honestly. Let them know that you enjoyed spending time together, but ultimately want to go separate ways. This may sound like, “Unfortunately, I don't feel the connection I'm looking for but I wish you the best and hope you find what you're seeking!”

Ask him how he's feeling, and affirm that his feelings are okay. If he knows that he can share painful things with you as a friend, without being rejected, this may help him feel better. Saying things like, “It sounds like you're pretty broken up about things,” can help him feel supported.

Send a polite response if they rejected you over text.

Generally, a short, friendly text is the way to go.

Try: “I hope you know how much I care about you and the relationship we have. I know it's not easy to share your feelings, and I admire the courage it took to let me know how you're feeling. I don't want to hurt you, but unfortunately, I don't feel the same way.

Thank them for letting you know.

You might say, “Aw, that's a bummer, but I understand. Thank you for giving me a heads up,” or, “I appreciate you telling me ahead of time. I'm sorry you can't make it!”

Give yourself credit for trying.

Remind yourself that you can handle the rejection. Even though you were turned down now, there will be another opportunity, another time. Get philosophical: Sometimes things happen for reasons we don't always understand.
