A very general mechanism for client-server applications is provided byRPC, the Remote Procedure Call package. RPC was developed by SunMicrsystems, and is a collection of tools and library functions.Important applications built on top of RPC are NFS, the NetworkFilesystem, and NIS, the Network Information System, both of which willbe introduced in later chapters.

An RPC server consists of a collection of procedures that client maycall by sending an RPC request to the server, along with the procedureparameters. The server will invoke the indicated procedure on behalf ofthe client, handing back the return value, if there is any. In order tobe machine-independent, all data exchanged between client and server isconverted to a so-called External Data Representation format (XDR)by the sender, and converted back to the machine-local representation bythe receiver.

Sometimes, improvements to an RPC application introduce incompatiblechanges in the procedure call interface. Of course, simply changing theserver would crash all application that still expect the originalbehavior. Therefore, RPC programs have version numbers assigned tothem, usually starting with-1, and with each new version of the RPCinterface this counter will be bumped. Often, a server may offer severalversions simultaneously; clients then indicate by the version number intheir requests which implementation of the service they want to use.

The network communication between RPC servers and clients is somewhatpeculiar. An RPC server offers one or more collections of procedures;each set is being called a program, and is uniquely identifiedby a program number. A list mapping service names to program numbersis usually kept in /etc/rpc, an excerpt of which is reproduced belowin figure-Remote Procedure Call (2).

Figure: A sample /etc/rpc file.

In TCP/IP networks, the authors of RPC were faced with the problem ofmapping program numbers to generic network services. Theychose to have each server provide both a TCP and a UDP port for eachprogram and each version. Generally, RPC applications will use UDP whensending data, and only fall back to TCP when the data to be transferreddoesn't fit into a single UDP datagram.

Of course, client programs have to have a way to find out which porta program number maps to. Using a configuration file for this would betoo inflexible; since RPC applications don't use reserved ports, there'sno guarantee that a port originally meant to be used by our databaseapplication hasn't been taken by some other process. Therefore, RPCapplications pick any port they can get, and register it with the so-calledportmapper daemon. The latter acts as a service broker for allRPC servers running on its machine: a client that wishes to contacta service with a given program number will first query the portmapperon the server's host which returns the TCP and UDP port numbers theservice can be reached at.

This method has the particular drawback that it introduces a single pointof failure, much like the inetd daemon does for the standardBerkeley services. However, this case is even a little worse, becausewhen the portmapper dies, all RPC port information is lost; thisusually means you have to restart all RPC servers manually, or rebootthe entire machine.

On , the portmapper is called rpc.portmap and residesin /usr/sbin. Other than making sure it is started formrc.inet2, the portmapper doesn't require any configuration work.

What is remote procedure call in simple words? ›

RPC is a request–response protocol. An RPC is initiated by the client, which sends a request message to a known remote server to execute a specified procedure with supplied parameters. The remote server sends a response to the client, and the application continues its process.

Should a remote procedure call be on or off? ›

Many Windows operating system procedures depend on the RPC service. Microsoft recommends that you don't disable the RPC service.

Why is the remote procedure call running on my computer? ›

RPC is commonly used to build and interact with distributed systems. RPC enables a program to call a subroutine on a different computer without it knowing it's remote. Even though RPC acts like a transport protocol, it's actually an inter-process communications procedure.

How do I turn off remote procedure calls? ›

Start > search box, type ser > Enter > scroll down to Remote Procedur... > right click at it > Properties > ar Startup Type heading, click the pointer and select Disable > OK when done.

What are the steps in the calling process for a remote procedure call? ›

The client sends a request message and the server acknowledges it. Then, after executing the procedure, the server sends a reply message and the client acknowledges the reply. Either a message carrying data (a request message or a reply message) or the ACK sent to acknowledge that message may be lost in the network.

What is the difference between rest and remote procedure call? ›

In Remote Procedure Call (RPC), the client makes a remote function (also known as method or procedure) call on a server. Typically, one or more data values are passed to the server during the call. In contrast, the REST client requests the server to perform an action on a specific server resource.

What is an example of a RPC? ›

Other examples of the use of RPC in experiments at CERN include: remote monitoring program control, remote FASTBUS access, remote error logging, remote terminal interaction with processors in VMEbus, the submission of operating system commands from embedded microprocessors, and many less general functions.

Why do we need remote procedure calls? ›

Importance of Remote Procedure Calls

They allow for seamless communication between different software systems located on separate machines. This facilitates the sharing and processing of data across various systems, thereby enhancing the functionality and efficiency of these systems.

Which one is the disadvantage of remote procedure call? ›

Potential Drawbacks of RPC

There is no flexibility in the hardware architecture. Remote calls may not be as fast or reliable as local calls. Because the concept can be implemented in various ways, it cannot be standardized. RPC is prone to failure.

What are the tools for remote procedure call? ›

– Some common tools used for testing RPC include Wireshark, Rpcclient, Metasploit Framework, and Nmap, among others. – RPC can be used to create a wide range of applications, including distributed databases, distributed file systems, and distributed computing systems.

What is the difference between remote procedure call and local calls? ›

Remote procedure calls are executed on another node of a network or computer. Local are executed by the server hosting the program.

What is the remote procedure call problem? ›

One of the primary culprits behind the RPC error is network connectivity problems. If your computer can't establish a stable connection with the network or server, the RPC error can occur. Outdated or incomplete Windows updates can lead to system instability, causing the RPC error.

Is remote procedure call secure? ›

Secure RPC (Remote Procedure Call) protects remote procedures with an authentication mechanism. The Diffie-Hellman authentication mechanism authenticates both the host and the user who is making a request for a service. The authentication mechanism uses Data Encryption Standard (DES) encryption.

Where is remote procedure call used? ›

Where is it applicable? You can use RPC in all client/server applications based on Windows operating systems. It can also be used to create client and server programs for heterogeneous network environments that include such operating systems as Unix and Apple.

What does "rpc failed" mean? ›

The Remote Procedure Call (RPC) is a Windows component that facilitates communication between different processes in the system over a network. However, it can sometimes fail when the users attempt to access a service, resulting in the 'Remote Procedure Call failed' error message.

How do I get my remote to work again? ›

Top tip - our quick recommended solution
  1. Remove the batteries from the remote control. ...
  2. On the remote control, press the Power button for three seconds.
  3. Reinsert the batteries, making sure they are inserted with the correct polarity (-/+), then see if the issue is resolved.

How to fix the remote procedure call failed in SQL server configuration manager? ›

The remote procedure call failed” error can be resolved by using several methods, which include restarting the remote procedure call (RPC) service, restarting the DCOM server process launcher, repairing system files, running the Windows app troubleshooter, or running a full system scan.

How do I reset my remote server? ›

using COMMAND Line
  1. Login with a full administrative account to another computer.
  2. Open a Command Prompt (CMD) window.
  3. Type the following command:
  4. Example 1: Restart a remote server.
  5. Shutdown /m \\servername /r.
  6. Example 2: Restart a remote server immediately.
  7. Shutdown /r /m \\servername /t 0.
