How it works?

  1. Buy a RegisteredPost label onlineor at any post office
  2. Declare the value of your item
  3. Attach the Registered Post label
  4. Complete the appropriate customs documentation for international items
  5. Hand the item over the counter
  6. Get a transaction receipt as proof of postage with a ID number
  7. Ask for a certificate of posting if you require evidence of the addressee
  8. Keep your transaction receipt as claims cannot be processed without it

Registered Post charges depend on the size and weight of the item you are posting and its destination.

Things to know

In the event that your registered item is not received by the addressee, An Post will compensate you subject to certain conditions.

When registering an item, you need to declare its replacement value as compensation is related to the declared value. Where no value is declared a maximum of €25.39 is payable. Compensation with regard to coin is limited to €12.70.

All enquiries must be made within one month of posting for items sent within Ireland.

When sending packets or parcels to destinations outside the European Union, a completed customs declaration is required and is available from your post office. An Post provides two customs forms:

  • The CP72 for parcels or items with a value in excess of €300
  • The CN22 for all other items

An Aviation Security Declaration, to ensure compliance with airline security regulations, must be attached to any packet or parcel containing goods sent within the EU, excluding Northern Ireland.

Registered Post International items will only be delivered when signed for. A copy of the signature can be obtained on request from the delivering postal operator and this can then be obtained fromAn Post Customer Serviceson 353 (1) 705 7600.

Tracking for Registered Post International is available up to dispatch from the Republic of Ireland but online tracking is not available to every country.

Check An Post’s list of prohibited items, includingthe full list of items restricted from the postal services.

Although cash is accepted, it is not covered by insurance under the Foreign Registered Post service. An Post recommends you avoid sending money by post and offers a range of otherservices to transfer moneysecurely.

Insurance cover is provided for the declared value up to €320 for post to Ireland and the UK.

Additional insurance is available for items posted within the Republic of Ireland. A charge of €4.50 is applicable for cover up to €1,500 and a charge of €5.50 for cover up to €2,000.

The following items will be accepted for Registered Post but are not insured:

  • Bank drafts
  • Cash and coins
  • Documents
  • Glass and other fragile items
  • Jewellery
  • Passports
  • Precious metals such as platinum, gold or silver
  • Vouchers with a monetary face value
