Reapplying at a Company That's Turned You Down | FlexJobs (1)

Just because you didn’t get the job last time, doesn’t mean you should never apply at this company again. But before you reapply for a job with a company that’s already turned you down, consider the following three circ*mstances.

3 Things to Think About Before Reapplying

“Just because you applied and got rejected before doesn’t automatically mean that you don’t have a chance again,” says Cidnye Work, former Career Expert at FlexJobs. “There are many success stories of job seekers applying somewhere again after being rejected, and it worked out. Think of this as a fresh chance to start over with a new set of circ*mstances.”

But before you send in your application, consider the following.

1. What’s New With You?

It might be the same role or a totally different one, but before you reapply, thoughtfully evaluate where you stand compared to last time.

“Maybe you didn’t have the necessary skills or experience last time, or your skills were better aligned for a different role at the company,” explains Work. “Try to reflect and think about what you can do differently this time around. Have you done some recent upskilling and have new skills and knowledge? Make sure you are highlighting what’s new to demonstrate how you’ve grown since the last time you applied.”

2. Is It a (Better) Match?

If there’s a role that matches with your skill set but this time it’s on a different team, you should apply. Consider this a fresh opportunity and be sure to tailor your cover letter and customize your resume to explain why you’re perfect for this position.

Likewise, if a different role in the same department opens up, consider applying if you are a better match for the role. Each job has a specific set of qualifications and requirements. The hiring manager didn’t pick you last time based on the specifics of that job. But you might be a better match for this job.

3. How Much Time Has Passed?

While there’s no magic number, if it’s been between three and six months since you last applied, you can certainly try again.

And, as Work notes, persistence can pay off. “Many companies use applicant tracking systems to keep track of their candidates. Recruiters can see your history of applying, which shows that you are really interested in the organization and can help you stand out as a candidate who really wants to work there.”

If at First You Don’t Succeed

While you continue your job search (and keep an eye on your dream company), stay in the know about what’s going on with the company and look for ways to develop your skills. That way, when the time comes, you’ll be ready to seize that next chance!
