In this insightful bonus episode of NASPA - Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education's SA Voices From the Field #podcast, Dr. Jill L. Creighton and Christopher Lewis, Ed.D interviewed a diverse panel of higher education leaders, sharing their wisdom on fostering JEDIB (justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging) in student affairs.Their powerful stories and strategies provide an essential roadmap for creating a more inclusive and equitable environment for both students and professionals:📚 Key Takeaways:- **Diversity in Leadership**: From Evette Castillo Clark to Taylor Cain, the urgency for diverse representation in student leadership and mentorship echoes loudly, reminding us that inclusive spaces begin with inclusive faces in power.- **Intentionality in Practice**: Panelists stress the importance of embedding equity and inclusion into everyday decisions, from hiring to student support. It's crucial to move beyond performative declarations toward actionable change.- **Challenges and Growth**: Despite difficulties in certain states and campuses, leaders are relentlessly pursuing DEI initiatives. Stories like Dr. Miguel Angel Hernandez's teach us that openness to learning is the key to personal and institutional growth.Listen to the full episode to get a well-rounded view of how universities across North America integrate DEI practices into their operations and what this means for professionals, particularly fathers, who aim to cultivate these values within their families and workplaces.Join our conversation. Luther Vandross told us a long time ago…A room is still a room even when there’s nothing there but gloomBut he also told us thatA room is not a house, and a house is not a home when the two of us are far apart.”And yet, every year as we start making plans for the school year, we ignore Luther, bless our hearts. We know intuitively that aplan is just a planbut that plan doesn’t translate into action unless our teachers implement our plans. And yet, we still spend our summer focusing on creating our plans for the year without also considering how we are going to get our teachers to invest in and align with our plans. In other words, we build the plan but we don’t build the people who must implement the plan. And then, every year, we’re surprised, frustrated, angry that not all our teachers implement our carefully laid plans once school starts. Here’s the truth. We cannot turn a school into something great when not all our teachers are fully with us no matter how good our plans are.So if you are making plans but you don’t have a plan for how you are going to get your teachers on board, well… get ready for frustration this fall. That’s why I’m working on something pretty cool for you at the end of the month. It’s designed to help you get your teachers on board with your plans from the very start of the school year. I’ll tell you a little more about it after the July 4 holidays (but what I can tell you right now is that it will be free!).Watch this space._____________________________________________________As Chief Builder for Mindsteps, Inc., an internationally recognized author, keynote speaker, and professional developer, I build and deliver content to help K-12 administrators turn their schools into success stories. #SchoolLeadership #EducationalLeadership #PrincipalLife #AssistantPrincipal #SchoolImprovement #EducationMatters #InnovativeLeadership #K12Education #FutureOfEducation #SchoolLeader #Principal #SchoolPrincipal#ProfessionalDevelopment #LikeABuilder

Senior Learning Solutionist with Extensive Experience Designing and Implementing Effective Workplace Learning and Leadership Development Strategies
I recently came across a study by Wallo, Kock, Reineholm, and Ellström (2021) that really struck a chord with me. It got me thinking about how we can create meaningful learning experiences for our little ones, even from a very young age.It warmed my heart to realize that the same principles that make learning so effective in the workplace can be applied to guide our children's growth and development. Whether it's through carefully planned lessons or spontaneous moments of discovery, every interaction is an opportunity to spark their curiosity and love for learning. This reminds me of a cherished memory I have of teaching my granddaughter to fold pants when she was just three years old. By breaking down the task, demonstrating each step, and offering gentle encouragement, I watched her beam with pride as she mastered a new skill. As parents, grandparents, and educators, we have the power to shape the way our children see themselves and the world around them. By being supportive, patient, and always ready to lend a helping hand, we can instill in them a sense of confidence, resilience, and an unwavering belief in their ability to learn and grow. So, let's embrace the role of learning-oriented leaders in our children's lives. Together, we can create a world where every child has the opportunity to discover their passions, unleash their potential, and develop a lifelong love for learning.#LearningThroughLove #LifelongLearning #ChildhoodMemories #GrowthMindset #BelieveInYourself #OurSMRT #leadership #Workplacelearning

Last month we hosted Weekend @ Workshop, a celebration of student leadership and learning. It was a remarkable day of student-led activities and sessions that gave our guests a real sense of what it's like to be a Workshop School student. All of this got me thinking about what's most important about student voice, which I shared in this recent NGLC post: https://lnkd.in/en_vugR4

💥 BIG NEWS! 💥After a rigorous year-long process developing our goals for the next five years, we are so excited to announce where we are headed.📖Our vitality-centered curriculum is now available for pre-order! If you want to see what we mean by learning for cultural renewal, you can pre-order the Sourced Education chapbook at https://lnkd.in/etVShjmV🌳One of our goals is to diversify our learning community–first by becoming more intergenerational, and secondly by inviting cultural diversity through language immersion and more. One of our design principles is to build beloved community and we are serious about it being one of the primary purposes of education.🌟We plan to become more intergenerational by opening our school up to K-12 learners, offering a soul discovery gap-year program in the print shop and an 8-month vitality-centered leadership program for adults, as well as inviting 55+ learners on our school trips that happen 3x yer year. We will continue to offer short-term programs for adults online and on campus.☘️ We are looking for 5 teams of 2 people who want to START A VITALITY-CENTERED SCHOOL using Sourced Design and Sourced Education. We will support school founders formally in a 3-year founding program and then partner for the long-term in the Sourced Education Network.🏹Participation in the community is a primary principle in our educational approach. This participation must be sustained and long-term. We will be working with local leaders through our Community Roundtable initiative to support leadership development and the cultivation of personhood, build beloved community amongst our leaders, and then address needs from a sustainable, vital place. This will not only serve our region, it is part of the educational model we scale through our school founders program. You will see how this works in our approach in the Sourced Education chapbook.Check out our completely updated website at https://springhouse.org. We're grateful for the 10 years of experience we have and excited about where we're heading!#vitality #community #intergenerational #life #transformingeducation

Community Builder. Regional Director (West) at NCEE. We partner with education systems at all levels to design systems that leverage the NOW to prepare ALL learners for the future. Let's collaborate!
In the world of #edleaders, summers seem to be equivalent to lots of things - especially devoting time to their own learning. Retreat anyone??I'm thrilled to share that our #leaderscollaborative and #superintendentsalliance are gathering in June to do just that - engage in deep learning together. Teams from across the #nation are convening June 26-29 in Seattle to engage in a learning experience designed to meet them where they are and further their #learning and #action around the core idea: designing #learnercentered #futureready systems that serve EVERY young person and EVERY adult at high levels. If you've spent past summers engaging in quick, "sit and get" style experiences, this is your #SIGN to shift. Our young people need us to prioritize our own learning in order to meet their needs NOW. That means moving away from episodic learning that is lost in the shuffle of the new year and toward deep learning that results in #action.Sage Creek High School principal, Josh Way, Ed.D, offers a glimpse of the experience. Registration is open to non-members NOW. Grab a spot for your and your team before we fill up. Whether you're an executive cabinet or a team of school leaders, this learning will change how you think about the 24-25 school year and beyond.Grab more info here: https://lnkd.in/gJYm6RAeps - This is a great way to get to know the National Center on Education and the Economy - note that we keep costs low to ensure access for all!Trevor Greene, Ed.D. Managing Director of Impact | Strategic Leader | Connector & Change Agent Driving Accelerated Progress
🌟 Wonderful school partners hosted recent orientations for the NOLA Tutor Collaborative at four school sites this semester. These orientations have been incredibly inspiring and have reinforced my belief in the potential of our future leaders. The young individuals participating in this program exhibit not only kindness but also a strong eagerness to learn and grow. They are diligently mastering essential skills such as time management, tutoring, and serving as positive role models for middle school students. Witnessing their ability to form meaningful connections and make a significant impact in just one semester, each semester, has been truly heartening. What particularly excites me about coordinating this program is the consistently strong data we see from our high-impact tutoring efforts. Tutoring sessions bring about tangible improvements in the lives of our students, and it's immensely gratifying to observe this progress firsthand.Recent insights suggest that in the next 6 to 10 years, Gen Z may constitute up to 30% of the workforce. Rather than viewing this demographic shift as daunting, I choose to see it as an opportunity for positive change. Young people are raising the bar with their standards and expectations, not only for themselves but also for future generations. As we navigate this evolving landscape, let's embrace change with open arms and work together to create inclusive and empowering work environments. By championing values such as kindness, inclusivity, and excellence, we can collectively shape a brighter future for all. And I can’t be more thankful for the wonderful school leaders I see in action, modeling true leadership day in and day out, ensuring these young people, tutees and tutors, have the most impactful experience. 💪🏽✨Check out the post below sharing a few photos from our recent orientations. These young people are ready to work! #WorkplaceCulture #ChangeIsGood #Empowerment #Inclusion #ImpactfulTutoringhttps://lnkd.in/gWM2sG7Q
