Which wire is common on a sprinkler valve? ›

Typically, the white wire is the common wire on a sprinkler valve. This makes it easier to identify, and many local electrical codes require the common wire to be white. However, in some places, any wire can be the common wire.

Check the circuit breaker or fuse. If it is blown, it's most likely caused by a field wiring short. The electromechanical controller will stop on the sta- tion that caused the problem. Reset the controller in rest position, replace the fuse or circuit breaker.

The most common cause of a stuck sprinkler head is dirt and debris. If dirt, rocks, leaves, or grass gets caught between a sprinkler body and the sprinkler riser, it can clog up the works and stop the riser from sliding back into the body. Resulting in a sprinkler head that won't go down.

A thermostat wire cannot be used for a sprinkler wire because it is not ranked for direct burial. If anything, it is best to keep sprinkler wire and thermostat wire to their respective applications. The differences in price are not significant to swap one for the other for budgeting reasons.

When using a wire-tracking tool you can hear the signal strength as well as follow the null meter. The signal will be stronger on either side of the current being sent through the wire from the wire tracking tool. After you have located the break, it is helpful to cross the path to narrow down the hot spot.

The common wire is usually white in color and runs from your controller to your master cylinder and then to each of the other valves on your irrigation system in turn.

To fix a sprinkler head that won't rotate, troubleshoot by adjusting water pressure, clearing obstructions, inspecting for debris, and examining parts for misalignment or damage. Consider installing a water pressure regulator for high-pressure issues.
