It’s pretty understandable that most of our social media platforms have ended up being memory feeds, with all of us reminiscing over happier – perhaps more innocent – times.
These shared memories give us a sense of belonging, and can take us back to simpler moments we cherish.
However, the most recent trending evocation is dividing TikTok, with ‘crunchy childhood’ being discussed and rebuffed in thousands of videos.
A crunchy childhood or granola childhood is characterised by the cereal bars children ate on excursions with parents.
If you had one, your parents were more focused on nature, walks, scenery, and activity, rather than TV, sweets, and more commercial things.
Realistically it seems to show a divide between typically middle class, nuclear family pursuits over those favoured by time-poor working class parents, but let’s forget about that and try to enjoy the fun.

Crunchy
You had a crunchy childhood, spending the weekends camping, hiking, or enjoying a National Trust property.
People probably reference TV or toys from your childhood, but you were perfectly happy with a book and some green space, and you don’t even know what The Disney Channel was like.
Your parents were most likely the type who made sure you had a super balanced diet, and a McDonald’s or can of co*ke was unheard of for you except at other kids’ parties.
You probably worried you were missing out as a child, but now think your mum being in the PTA and foraging for mushrooms was pretty wholesome and fun.
Semi-crunchy
You probably didn’t have Sky TV or the newest trending trainers (customisable K-Swiss for young Millennials), and your family holidays were typically in the UK countryside.
Your parents were more likely to take you to the swimming baths rather than up a mountain, but they were normally activities over straight chilling in the house.
You got Coco Pops as a treat, but at least you knew what they tasted like (can’t be said for full crunchy).
A semi-crunchy childhood means you were slightly sheltered from the likes of Tracy Beaker, Brainlicker sour sweets, and Pokémon, but you weren’t totally out of the loop with trends.
Non-crunchy
Your parents weren’t the kind who worried about putting handmade sushi and crudités into your lunch box, but that is more than fine. You enjoyed a childhood with all the new things that time had to offer.
As a family, you probably took advantage of package deals to enjoy a holiday abroad, and you (or one of your parents) probably wore a full football kit to the airport. You had a ball with some luminous mocktail doing the Macarena while the adults relaxed at a kid-friendly bar.
Sometimes you may have felt inferior to the children whose mums made perfect homemade cakes for the school bake sale, but you know now that the shop-bought ones were just as good – and accessible for your family at the time.
You relish those times spent watching Recess in your Batman PJs, or running round a pub garden with a Panda Pops.
