How to effectively power up Pokemon Go? ›

Powering up Pokémon you've caught increases their CP and HP. You can power up a Pokémon with Stardust and Candy, which you can acquire by catching Pokémon or hatching Eggs. You can also earn Candy by transferring Pokémon. How much you can power up a Pokémon is limited by your current level.

Powering up a Pokémon requires both Stardust and Candy. The amount of Stardust and Candy required for the next power-up will be shown on the Pokémon's summary screen. If the Pokémon is at the maximum level for the player's Trainer level, then the player will not be able to power up the Pokémon.

Stardust and XL Candies are essential resources in Pokemon Go, use them wisely to power up your Pokemon efficiently. Investing in strong Pokemon like Dragonite, Rhyperior, and Swampert can give you an edge in battles and raids.

Power up costs

Lucky Pokémon only require half of the Stardust cost to power up and Purified Pokémon take 10% less of both Stardust and Candy. The discounts can be stacked, thus Lucky Purified Pokémon costs 45% of the origin cost.

That question depends entirely on the Pokémon and what you want to use it for. If it's for Master League or you want to use it for Raids and Gym battles, then you should power it up once you've evolved it to the final stage, as this generally offers a bigger stat buff, making it more useful quicker.

A Pokémon's CP potential and IVs are not affected by evolution: IVs (Attack, Defense, Stamina values hidden in the game) and CP potential (the max CP that can be reached when fully powered up) remains the same regardless of whether you Power Up before or after evolving.

20 is the maximum level a pokemon hatched from an egg or caught from a raid can be. Pokemon at level 30 already have 91% of their stats and going from 30 to 40 costs a lot of dust and candy. You can feel free to max out your pokemon, capping your mons at 30 is more resource efficient if you want quantity over quality.

Benefits of choosing the “Collecting Stardust" path

While the previous path rewards you with double XP for catching Pocket Monsters, choosing the Collecting Stardust will reward you with twice the amount of Stardust for catching beasts in Pokemon GO. So, neither of the paths is better than the other.

You should evolve Shadow Pokemon if you want an evolved-form with the Shadow Power effect on Quick and Charged Moves. It costs more Candy, but if raw power is what you're after, then it's worth it. You should evolve Purified Pokemon if you want to spend less Candy.

For Shadow Pokémon, Powering Up and unlocking a second Charged Attack requires more Candy and Stardust than for regular Pokémon. Shadow Pokémon also deal more damage with their Fast and Charged Attacks, but they take more damage when attacked.
