Question

Have a windows server 2003 R2 that's in a DMZ. I need to have ports 139 and 445 opened for my patch scanning software. When scanning this particular server in the DMZ, I receive the following message:
*System found but it is not listening on NetBIOS ports. The patching software states that this means:*The computer isn't listening or it's blocking access to TCP ports 139 and 445.
If I log on locally or remote into this server, I can not "telnet 127.0.0.1 139". I receive "Connecting to 127.0.0.1....Could not open connection to the host, on port 139: Connect failed. I can telnet to 445.
If I "netstat -an |find /i "listening" it shows the "ip address:139" as listening as well as 445.
Windows firewall is not enabled on this server.
What else can I check? Any help is appreciated. Thank You.

Hi,
Please make sure the following services were started:
Computer Browser Service
Workstation Service
Server Service
NetBIOS over TCP/IP
For test the port 139, please try use the IP address of the server, NetBIOS or FQDN. You can use the telnet command or PortQuery tools.
PortQry Command Line Port Scanner Version 2.0

same issue here, but only on windows 10 pro
filesharing is totally gone on my workstation/fileserver (for home)..; it still connects to other computers, but it cannot show anything to the network.. both port 139 and 445 are not listening.
I've disabled firewall, re-enabled it, set it to default... used the networking 'repair', nothing helps
