SANS Internet Storm Center: port 999
Notes:
Port numbers in computer networking represent communication endpoints. Ports are unsigned 16-bit integers (0-65535) that identify a specific process, or network service. IANA is responsible for internet protocol resources, including the registration of commonly used port numbers for well-known internet services.
Well Known Ports: 0 through 1023.
Registered Ports: 1024 through 49151.
Dynamic/Private : 49152 through 65535.
TCP ports use the Transmission Control Protocol, the most commonly used protocol on the Internet and any TCP/IP network. TCP enables two hosts to establish a connection and exchange streams of data. TCP guarantees delivery of data and that packets will be delivered in the same order in which they were sent. Guaranteed communication/delivery is the key difference between TCP and UDP.
UDP ports use the Datagram Protocol. Like TCP, UDP is used in combination with IP (the Internet Protocol) and facilitates the transmission of datagrams from one computer to applications on another computer, but unlike TCP, UDP is connectionless and does not guarantee reliable communication; it's up to the application that received the message to process any errors and verify correct delivery. UDP is often used with time-sensitive applications, such as audio/video streaming and realtime gaming, where dropping some packets is preferable to waiting for delayed data.
When troubleshooting unknown open ports, it is useful to find exactly what services/processes are listening to them. This can be accomplished in both Windows command prompt and Linux variants using the "netstat -aon" command. We also recommend runnig multiple anti-virus/anti-malware scans to rule out the possibility of active malicious software. For more detailed and personalized help please use our forums.

Is Telnet a TCP or UDP protocol? ›
Telnet uses the TCP port protocol and port 23 to establish a connection with remote computers.
Is port 993 TCP or UDP? ›
Port 993 is a TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) port. It is specifically designated for the IMAPS (Internet Message Access Protocol over TLS/SSL) service, which is used to securely retrieve emails from a mail server.
Is port 9990 TCP or UDP? ›
Resolution. Ports 8080 and 9990 TCP are used between DC and VNA.
How do I know if my port is TCP or UDP? ›
Open the command prompt (Start > Run > cmd) and use netstat -ano | find /i "<port_number>". It will show you all processes that use the specified port. Notice the PID (process id) in the right column. -a – Displays all active connections and the TCP and UDP ports on which the computer is listening.
Which port uses both TCP and UDP? ›
The answer to the question: Which of the following protocols uses both TCP and UDP? is option D, i.e., DNS. The application layer protocol Domain Name Server, abbreviated as DNS, uses both TCP and UDP at the transport layer.
What UDP ports are usually open? ›
By default, the following ports are open and listening on BIG-IP external interfaces:
- TCP port 22 (ssh)
- TCP port 53 (dns)
- TCP port 179 (bgp)
- TCP port 443 (https)
- UDP port 53 (dns)
- UDP port 123 (ntp)
- UDP port 161 (snmp)
- UDP port 162 (snmp_trap)
What port is associated with UDP? ›
UDP port 1900 uses the Datagram Protocol, a communications protocol for the Internet network layer, transport layer, and session layer. This protocol when used over PORT 1900 makes possible the transmission of a datagram message from one computer to an application running in another computer.
Can I Telnet to the UDP port? ›
A UDP port is not a TCP port, and telnet uses TCP. Therefore it will not connect to a UDP port.
What is the difference between TCP and UDP? ›
The main difference between TCP (transmission control protocol) and UDP (user datagram protocol) is that TCP is a connection-based protocol and UDP is connectionless. While TCP is more reliable, it transfers data more slowly. UDP is less reliable but works more quickly.
SSH uses TCP, not UDP (User Datagram Protocol). Unlike TCP, UDP is a connectionless protocol, which means it doesn't make sure the recipient is ready to receive files before sending them. As a result, data can arrive out of order, in pieces or not at all. Although SSH typically uses TCP, it doesn't have to.
What is port 993 and 995? ›
What's the Difference Between Port 995 and 993? Port 995 and port 993 are both related to securely downloading mail messages from email servers using SSL/TLS encryption. Port 995 is for doing so using the POP3 protocol, while port 993 is for using the IMAP protocol.
What uses TCP port 8888? ›
TCP port 8888 is commonly used by Cassandra, a distributed NoSQL database management system.
Is port 993 SSL or TLS? ›
Yes, when you use IMAP over port 993, you must use SSL/TLS encryption between the clients and the server. This means that both the server and the clients must implement SSL/TLS. If you want to use IMAP without encryption, you should use port 143.
Is port 9 TCP or UDP? ›
Which VPN protocol is TCP or UDP? ›
UDP is mainly used for online streaming and downloading. TCP is more reliable but also slightly slower than UDP and is mainly used for web browsing. If playback doesn't begin shortly, try restarting your device.
Does SCP use UDP TCP? ›
SCP runs over TCP port 22 by default. Like RCP, there is no RFC that defines the specifics of the protocol.
Is TCP or UDP? ›
