PERSUASION Definition & Legal Meaning

A lawyer's tools are the words, phrases, and sentence structure used to persuade a reader to reach the desired conclusion. Of the many definitions of persuasion, two stand out. The first; persuasion is the act of persuading. The second; persuasion is a belief held with complete assurance.

Due to the complexity of feelings, pathos is a powerful mode of persuasion that allows people to connect with one another and experience emotions. The feelings a person experiences can also motivate them to act differently or believe something to be true, making pathos very effective for persuasion.

Some common synonyms of persuasion are belief, conviction, opinion, sentiment, and view. While all these words mean "a judgment one holds as true," persuasion suggests a belief grounded on assurance (as by evidence) of its truth.
