Packing List for Yellowstone and Glacier (1)

While exploring Yellowstone National Park and Glacier National Park, you will likely need to pack a few extra things for your stay at Wander Camp. We’ve combined a list of things you might consider bringing. Note that this isn’t a comprehensive list, but a list of things specific to Yellowstone and Glacier. For a more comprehensive list, see our Glamping Packing List.

Clothing:

T-shirts

The first thing you will want is plenty of T-shirts. They are very versatile and can accompany you on any adventure or they are comfy to lounge around camp in. Because you will be in the West, temperatures can get cooler at night, so we recommend packing long sleeve and short sleeve t-shirts. Long sleeves can also protect you from the sun during the day, especially because you will be at a higher elevation.

Shorts and Pants

In the summer months shorts will be the best. But long, comfortable pants are recommended for lounging around camp or for higher elevation hikes where it gets cold. Just make sure you can go on your adventures in the pants you wear.

Layers

In the West, especially in Yellowstone and Glacier, you are at a higher elevation. Because of the high elevation, the temperatures can drop dramatically and fluctuate 30 degrees. Our tents have space heating but you might want extra layers for the night when it gets colder. We recommend a hoodie or fleece. Also, if you plan to roast marshmallows and spend time around the campfire at Wander Camp, you will want warmer clothing.

Hiking Shoes

There are numerous hikes in Yellowstone and Glacier. When you take in this beautiful scenery, you want to make sure your feet can take you there! Hiking shoes are strongly recommended to protect your feet. Make sure they are sturdy and will support your feet. Depending on the activity level you are planning on you can pack different shoes. Athletic shoes will sustain most of the boardwalks in Yellowstone. For hiking in Glacier and parts of Yellowstone, athletic shoes are not recommended and you should have hiking shoes or boots.

Rain Jacket

Although the West is very dry, afternoon rainstorms are likely. Rainstorms in this region also drop the temperatures so bring a jacket that will keep you warm and dry.

Water Shoes

If you plan to do any water activities while at your stay water shoes are a must. Activities could include swimming in the Boiling River in Yellowstone, rafting in Glacier, or kayaking on the many lakes in the area. Make sure your water shoes are secure and won’t fall off (flip-flops are not recommended). Chacos work great!

Swimsuit

It’s always a good idea to pack a swimsuit just in case. Like mentioned above, there are a lot of water activities in this region so if you want to take a dip too, you can!

Miscellaneous for Adventuring

Camera

First, you will want a camera! You are going to see so many beautiful landscapes and picturesque spots that you will want to capture and remember. A phone camera works fine, but if you have a better camera, you won’t regret bringing it!

Daypack or Backpack

While you are away from camp and exploring Yellowstone and Glacier, you’ll want a small bag to carry snacks, sunscreen, water, layers, and anything else you and the family will want throughout the day.

Water Bottle

With all the hiking and walking you’ll be doing, hydration is a must! In the summer months it can also get pretty warm and sunny so you want to make sure you don’t get heat stroke on any of your adventures.

Hat, Sunglasses, Sunscreen

Although some days may be chilly, because Yellowstone and Glacier are at a higher elevation, you can burn easily. You’ll want to protect yourself so the rest of your stay is enjoyable!

Binoculars

Yellowstone is known greatly for its vast amount and variety of wildlife. A lot of times the wildlife will be far enough away, binoculars will make all the difference. It will also help you keep your distance from the wildlife which is highly recommended.

Bear and Bug Spray

If you plan to go hiking, bear spray is a must. Yellowstone has a high population of bears and park guides recommend all hikers carry this on the trails with them. Don’t try to pack bear spray on an airplane, you can purchase it in the park if need be. Bug spray is always a good idea in the summer, especially at night while walking around or by the campfire at camp.

Tablecloth

At Wander Camp, our picnic tables are already set up and ready to go. If you plan on enjoying a picnic lunch in the park, a nice table cloth will tie it all together. A packable cooler could also be really nice to have your picnic lunch ready to go. The parks have a lot of picnic tables throughout and this just completes the experience.
