Our Roots
The core of our investment team began as members of the asset management division of Salomon Brothers, an investment firm founded in 1910.
Peter Wilby, Co-CIO of SHIP Strategies, led the asset management group at Salomon Brothers, and along with Jim Craige, Co-CIO, Head of Emerging Markets, pioneered investing in emerging markets debt (EMD). Other senior team members—many of whom remain at Stone Harbor today—were also innovators in global fixed income investing during their tenures at Salomon Brothers.
From 1999 through 2006, the team continued investing in global fixed income markets for institutional investors as part of Citigroup, following Salomon Brothers’ acquisition by the Travelers Group.
The team spun out of Citigroup and founded Stone Harbor Investment Partners as an independent fixed income investment manager focused on global credit and multi-sector credit strategies for institutional investors. The company established headquarters in New York, with offices in London and Singapore.
Stone Harbor Investment Partners became an affiliated manager of Virtus Investment Partners, Inc. (NYSE: VRTS) effective January 1, 2022.
