What happens when you remove a shortcut from OneDrive? ›

Select Remove shortcut. This only removes the shortcut from your OneDrive. The folder or file is still accessible from the SharePoint Drive web app or the Shared view in the OneDrive web app. If you delete the folder or file instead, it will be deleted from everyone's OneDrive and the owner will have to restore it.

In OneDrive, in the navigation pane, select Shared > With you. Find the folder you want to add, and click the circle in the folder's tile to select it. Select Add shortcut to My files.

If you need to be able to access files offline or make changes to files offline, then synchronising is the best option. If you do not need to access files offline or are concerned about storage space, adding a shortcut to OneDrive is the better option.

Delete from your OneDrive but not your computer

If you want to keep a file, photo, or folder on your computer, but not on OneDrive, use File Explorer or Mac Finder to move the file outside your OneDrive folder to a different folder on your computer.

Hold down the shift key while choosing Delete from the dropdown. (If you don't hold the shift key Delete doesn't delete the shortcut, it just moves it to the “recycle bin folder”. (The recycle bin is just a special system folder.) This won't delete the file itself, just the shortcut.
