Can you use a ceiling medallion with a flush mount light? ›

They're easy to install, inexpensive, and instantly add character. Click through for my favorites! Obviously ceiling medallions can be used with pendant lighting, chandeliers, and even semi flush mounts… really any type of “hanging” light fixture.

“Measure the length and width of your room in feet. Multiple the length and the width, then divide by 7. This will give you the proportionate medallion size in inches. For instance… a 10‐by‐14 foot room calculation would be: 10 feet x 14 feet = 140 square feet divided by 7 = 20 inches diameter.

The medallion can be bigger or smaller than the fixture. You don't want it to be the same size as the fixture as this will make the two objects form a virtual column, and this will make the room appear to be smaller than its actual size.

Adhesive. You can use any adhesive that is rated for use with polyurethane (check the back of the label) -- we have had great success using Red Devil Construction Adhesive, LoctitePowergrab and PL Premium Polyurethane Adhesive, all of which work well and are readily available at most home improvement stores.

An interesting effect can be achieved on the ceiling medallions that are molded in deep relief using a “dry brush” technique when you go over base color with dry brash using deeper color. If you want to achieve a bolder effect, you can highlight ceiling medallions design with gold, bronze, silver, or brass paint.

Today it is very common to see ceiling medallions used in many applications. The trend seems to be moving away from the traditional white finish to more exocentric faux finishes.

Using a large bit, drill a hole in the center of the medallion to provide access to the drywall saw. Insert the drywall saw into the drilled hole and cut along the small circle you just drew. Sand the hole edges smooth.

Spread construction adhesive on the back of the medallion, press the medallion into place, and secure it with screws that are inset enough so you can later spread a little filler over the screws to hide them. Finish up with a layer of paint.

While ceiling medallions are certainly a fitting addition to an ornate, traditional home, they can also add character to a home decorated in a more transitional style. The good news is they're usually easy to install and can be made totally renter-friendly with the exclusion of pin nails or adhesive.

To remove a medallion, climb a ladder with a sharp utility knife or razor blade mounted in a scraper-style holder, a wide putty knife or taping knife, and a smaller putty knife or, even better, a small pry bar with a thin blade, such as a Sharkgrip pry bar (www.sharkcorp.com).
