Key Facts & Information
LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
- At the end of the lesson, students will be able to use place value understanding to round multi-digit whole numbers to any place.
A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER:
- When teaching rounding of numbers ensure that the learner:
- Understands how to round to the nearest 10 (example: 54 rounds to 50).
- Understands how to round to the nearest 100 (example 254 rounds to 300).
- Understands how to round to the nearest 1000 (example: 2,456 rounds to 2,000)
THEORY:
- Rounding is a procedure for estimating. 5 is the golden rule: 0,1,2,3,4 round down, and 5,6,7,8 and 9 round up.
- Underline the digit, look next door.
- If it’s 5 or greater, add one more.
- If it’s less than 5, leave it for sure.
- Everything after is a zero, not more
- Example: Round off 345,126 to the nearest ten, nearest hundred, and nearest thousand.
- Nearest Ten
- We need to decide if the ten is going to remain the same or change to the next whole number. First we need to establish which is the ten in the number 345,126.
- The ten in 345,126 is the 2 so we underline the 2.
- Now we look next door to determine if the 2 will change or remain the same
- If the number next door is 0,1,2,3,4 then the 2 will remain the same. If the number is 5,6,7,8,9 then the 2 will change to 3. Here the number is 6 so therefore the 345,126 will become 345,130.
- Nearest hundred
- Now we underline the hundreds column and look next door to see the number is 2 therefore the underlined number will remain the same. There rounded to the nearest hundred is 345,100
- Nearest thousand
- Therefore the nearest thousand is 345,000
