The Dutch are the best non-native English speakers worldwide
Maintaining their leading position, the Dutch have secured the top spot for the fifth consecutive time in theEF English Proficiency Index (EPI), a position they've consistently held since the index's inception in 2011. This annual ranking, the most extensive English proficiency study globally, compares 113 countries, drawing data from a vast pool of 2.2 million test-takers representing various towns, cities, and regions.
The Netherlands scored 647 in this year’s EF EPI , 145 points above the worldwide average, granting the country a ‘very high proficiency’ ranking. The Netherlands’ leading status is followed by Singapore, Austria, Denmark and Norway– the top five non-native English speaking populations in the world.
Countries falling within this category have citizens proficient in using nuanced and contextually appropriate English in social settings. They can comprehend advanced English texts and effectively negotiate contracts with native English speakers. A noteworthy discovery from the EF EPI is that working adults have been steadily improving their English skills since 2015. These advancements are occurring at a pace that cannot be solely attributed to a new generation of more proficient English speakers ageing up; instead, adults are actively developing their language proficiency in professional settings as well.
English fluency creates a welcoming environment for international commerce
Amsterdam's flourishing business sector owes much to various factors, among them the city's excellent proficiency in English, as indicated in this year’s results. The prevalence of non-native English speakers not only facilitates effective communication but also promotes a diverse work environment where employees can exchange ideas seamlessly across networks and borders while easily adapting to life in Amsterdam. This linguistic ease fosters a broad spectrum of industries, presenting exciting opportunities for international businesses to set up in the city.
