How to get an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number
An ITIN, or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, is a 9-digit identifier assigned by the IRS to individuals who cannot obtain a Social Security Number (SSN). This allows foreign residents to fulfil their tax obligations in the United States by filing income tax returns.
To obtain an ITIN, you just need to fill out and submit the W-7 Form after obtaining your visa. Tax responsibilities differ across states, so it's advisable to understand your potential tax liabilities and the procedures for payment before relocating from the UK to the USA.

- Tax status:This is a complex area, and you may be subject to federal and state taxes in the US, depending on where you live and work. The UK has what’s known as a “double tax treaty” with the US, which means if you are subject to tax in both countries, you may be able to avoid paying tax twice. Your tax treatment will depend on your situation, and you should always seek advice from a tax professional to avoid penalties.
