Is Moodle Cloud still free? ›

If you are a registered not-for-profit or non-government organisation, you may be eligible for a MoodleCloud Standard plan at no cost. To apply for a free plan for your organisation, please create a MoodleCloud account before completing the application form here.

With self-hosted Moodle, you have a fully free platform that can be enhanced with exactly the features you require and pay only for the extra functionalities you seek. Moodle Cloud on the other hand has variable pricing based on the scale of your site.

Moodle is provided freely as Open Source software, under the GNU General Public License. Anyone can adapt, extend or modify Moodle for both commercial and non-commercial projects without any licensing fees and benefit from the cost-efficiencies, flexibility and other advantages of using Moodle.

A free Moodle app is available for Android and iOS, with the possibility of purchasing your own branded Moodle app. Moodle is developed and maintained by Moodle Pty Ltd, familiarly known as Moodle HQ.

Moodle is open source under the GPL licence. Everything we produce is available for you to download and use for free.

One of the most noticeable limitations of Moodle Cloud is the cap on the number of users. You can not go above 1000 and there are lots of narrow price bandings below that meaning you may have to go through the process of changing plans several times as your user numbers grow.
