hey,
this might sound a bit stupid but i was wondering,
in the game of monopoly one of the chance cards says "BANK PAYS YOU DIVIDEND OF 50"
NOW..... DOES THIS MEAN BANK PAYS YOU 50?
OR DOES THIS MEAN BACK PAYS YOU HALF SO =25?
ANKUSH
also can someone tell me why.

it means that you receive $50 from the bank because the dividend is the ammount of money that the bank pays you for having stock in their company. If anything else, it would be $12.5, because dividends are payed out quarterly.
aerodude
ps. I think that you are overanalizing this just a bit.

o im not sure about that 5% minus or the 50$ see i always thought of it as dividend meaning divide or half so divided OF 50 is 25
see if it said dividend 50 then yes it means 50 for sure
maybe i should just email monopoly for this because i think there are 2 parts to this.
well i appreciate the help
Ankush
Ps.its a great game

in math...dividend means whatever you got by deviding something...in monopoly (and banking) the dividend is what you got payed after they devided the proffits....there for the statement "BANK PAYS YOU DIVIDENT OF 50" means that they already devided a larger number (let's say there were 100 people with stock in the bank...then they made $5000 dollars of shareable proffit that year)

Why would they say "BANK PAYS YOU DIVIDENT OF 50" and give you 25 when they could just say "Bank pays you 25?"

The Leather Lady
Merriam Webster:
Main Entry: div·i·dend
Pronunciation: 'di-v&-"dend, -d&nd
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English divident, from Latin dividendus, gerundive of dividere
1 : an individual share of something distributed: as a : a share in a pro rata distribution (as of profits) to stockholders b : a share of surplus allocated to a policyholder in a participating insurance policy
2 a : a resultant return or reward b : BONUS
3 a : a number to be divided b : a sum or fund to be divided and distributed
Johanna
ps "bank pays you dividend of $50" sounds better than "collect $50 from the bank".
