A money mindset is the deeply held beliefs, attitudes and assumptions we create about money. Our money mindset forms our thoughts around money, our thoughts determine our emotions about money, our emotions drive our actions with money, our actions become our money personality (habits) and our money personality drives the results in our financial life.
How is Our Money Mindset formed?
Our money mindset is influenced by the situation and culture we grow up in, and emotional experiences we have associated with money over our lifetime.
What is a Christian Money Mindset?
A Christian Money Mindset has a Biblical perspective on money. This Biblical perspective allows one to:
Overcome fear and anxiety that is inherent in a culture-driven money mindset
Form a money personality (habits) aligning with Biblical scripture
Positively engage more with others at home, at work, at church and in the community
Experience more freedom to share time, talents and treasures with others
What is a Biblical Perspective on Money?
There are two recurring themes throughout the Bible that tells us how we can please God with the way we think about and manage our money including in Jesus' teachings.
1. A person can only have one master, God or mammon. Mammon is anything we put first in our life before God. Not just in our priorities but also in what we put our faith in. When it comes to wealth, the Bible says:
a. Be humble knowing it all belongs to and comes from God , praise Him and give Him thanks (Deuteronomy 8:17-18, 1 Samuel 2:7, 2 Chronicles 1:11-12, Ecclesiastes 5:10, Ecclesiastes 7:12, Matthew 6:26, Luke 12:13-34, Luke 12:42-48,, Luke 16:13-1, Acts 8:20, 1 Timothy 6:7-10, 1 Timothy 6:17-19, Hebrews 13:5, Revelation 3:17)
b. Be honest (Deuteronomy 25:13-15, Proverbs 13:11, Luke 3:14, Romans 13:7-8, 1 Peter 5:2-3)
c. Be fair (Leviticus 19:13, Proverbs 10:4, Luke 12:15, 1 Timothy 5:17-18)
2. Serve God through Financial Stewardship. The Bible says this means:
a. Give the first 10% to God (Genesis 4:2-5, Genesis 14:18-20, Genesis 28:20-22, Leviticus 27:30-33, Proverbs 3:9, Malachi 3:6-12, Mark 12:41-44 )
b. Manage money wisely (Proverbs 11:14, Proverbs 15:22, Proverbs 27:23, Ecclesiastes 5:13,Matthew 25:14–30, Luke 14:28, 1 Timothy 3:5)
c.Take care of family (Deuteronomy 28:12, Proverbs 13:11,1 Timothy 5:4,1 Timothy 5:8,1 John 3:17-18)
d. Be generous to others (Exodus 22:25, Deuteronomy 23:19, Proverbs 11:24, Matthew 6:19, Matthew 19:21, Luke 12:13-34, Luke 12:42-48, Acts 4:32, 2 Corinthians 9:6-15, James 5:1-6)
