How to change port mode? ›

Router ports must be configured as either access, hybrid, or network. The default is network. Access ports — Configured for customer facing traffic on which services are configured. If a Service Access Port (SAP) is to be configured on the port or channel, it must be configured as an access port or channel.

Enter the configure terminal command to access global configuration mode. Enter the interface ethernet command to configure the interface mode. Enter the switchport command to set the interface as switchport. Enter the switchport mode command to configure the switchport interface in trunk mode.

Know the five switch port modes: On, Off, Desirable, Auto, and NoNegotiate.

To check the mode setting for a port on the switch, use either the Port Status screen in the menu interface or show interfaces brief in the CLI (see Viewing port status and configuration (CLI)).

To forward ports on your router, log into your router and go to the port forwarding section. Next, enter the port numbers and your device's IP address. Choose a forwarding protocol and save your changes.

By default, on a Cisco switch running IOS, the port mode on all interfaces is set to “switchport mode dynamic desirable”; this means when two Cisco IOS devices are connected to each other, they will automatically try to negotiate and setup a trunk link.

Activating a Port

To activate or enable a port on your Cisco Switch, connect to your Switch and type "show interface status" to see which ports are enabled and which are disabled. Type enable, then use configuration commands to set up the port you want to enable.

The Privileged EXEC mode command configure terminal is used to enter the Global Configuration Mode.

If set, the router will prompt you for a password. Once in Privileged Mode, you will notice the prompt changes from ">" to a "#" to indicate that we are now in Privileged Mode.
