A Little About My Story
First of all I want you to know that I too have been where you are right now. I want to share with you a little about my journey on how I went from a nobody in the photography industry to replacing a full time income and still doing it 10 years later. And then I really want to help you get there. So I have an invitation for you for a virtual event that is coming up soon.
Let me take you back to 2014 when I was stepping onto the scene as a photographer. I was 20 and my daughter was a few months old. I got pregnant when I was 19 and was living with my now husband who was my boyfriend at the time. So I was back in college at this point and working a part time job. I had also found my passion for photography and was trying to start my business. So I’m definitely someone who knows what it’s like to be a mom and have all of these other things going on while trying to find the time to dedicate to a photography business.
I feel that the reason it was so hard for me was because I loved it so much but I didn’t have any photography business income strategies. I just wanted to do more and more sessions. With that being said, I want you to hear me. If you’re in a season of your life where you’re juggling all of these things and you’re just frustrated with it please know that I am with you. But please also know that it is possible to make it happen.
Take It Back To Your Why in Order to Make Money With Photography
You have to understand that you are more than a photographer. You have a calling in your life and your photography business is your vehicle. So think about the big picture. What is the impact that you want your photography business to have on your life? We tend to go down a rabbit hole when we are frustrated and overwhelmed that no one is booking us. It can be really helpful though to just zoom out and go back to your big picture. How can you impact people? Remind yourself of what’s possible and why you’re showing up. Because if you don’t then you’ll end up being the photographer who is like, this is totally not worth it. I don’t want to do this anymore and then you quit. I don’t want that for you.
So the first question I want you to sit with today is what impact do you want your photography business to have on you and others? You can journal on that if you’d like or have a conversation with a friend about it. Or send it to me on Instagram or post about it in our Facebook community. You need to determine where it is that you are going before you can do anything about it.
Determining Your Goals to Make Money with Photography
When I first got my business going my next goal was to leave my full time job as a teacher. I knew I had a calling with a photography business and I wanted to start by paying cash for groceries. So then my next goal was to save up money for our wedding. This helped me prove to myself that I can hit goals that I set for myself. This is what I want you to do. What is your first goal that you want to knock out of the park? Meeting these goals one by one is going to impact your family. It will show your kids that you took your amazing talent and were able to get people to pay you for it. It will show your husband that you have a serious business and you can contribute to the family with it.
So grab hold of whatever your goal is. Is it groceries? Is it paying off debt? Paying off a credit card balance? Providing a vacation for your family? Whatever that goal is hold onto it and we’re going to run full speed towards that goal and you’re going to crush it in 6-12 months. Do you believe it? Because your mindset is going to be your biggest obstacle. It’s the thing that tries to tell us no, no settle down don’t do that. That’s scary. You can’t charge that much. People won’t pay that much and the list goes on. But I’m here telling you that you can. I see photographer after photographer set a goal and crush it even though they feel scared and unsure. And they kept telling themselves if Brooke believes in me then I’m going to borrow Brooke’s belief.
