Hi there,

I'm having two issues which I believe might be connected likely to be connected:

Issue 1

Whenever I airdrop files to my MacBook the files disappear. The downloads folder will auto pop up but the files are no where to be found.

Issue 2

When I right click on any app in the dock and click show recent, it doesn't actually show the most recent files. It seems to be stuck on files from months ago, even if I just opened and saved a new file, it won't show up on the list (I've mainly observed it using Logic Pro X).

Any ideas? I've recently updated to Ventura 13.6 hoping this would fix it but still no joy. Thanks in advance.

Hi, I also experience “issue 1” related to Airdrop. From my iPhone or iPad I can find my MacBook Pro, send a file (nothing unusual: ex. .jpeg or .pdf) and see the Download icon popping up in the dock. However, nothing’s there. It’s been many months now and the problem was there even prior the Sonoma update (at the time I hoped it could have fixed that). On the other direction it works: the MacBook sends Airdrop files towards my mobile devices.

I tried many times with the suggested workaround, unsuccessfully. There must be something else..? My opinion is that the problem is more linked with saving the files in the mac than with communication itself.

My recent files are right so I guess the two believe are not related.

Thanks for any input or suggestion!

  • Airdrop keeps opening download folder on MacHey everyone, does anyone know how to stop the downloads folder from opening up when I AirDrop?I've just recently upgraded to the M1 MacBook Air, but the one thing that has frustrated me more than anything is that for some reason the downloads folder keeps popping up as soon as I transfer. (This did not happen on my 2016 MacBook Pro also running MacOS Big Sur). This is why it annoys me so much: Basically I transfer because I need something in an app which I don't already have on my Mac. So for example, I'm writing up a document in Word in fullscreen mode, and then I airdrop a scanned picture and then it transfers me to Desktop 1 for example and opens downloads, where now I have to close downloads (bcs that means nothing to me) switch screens and then easily just transfer the image from the downloads in the Dock to where I want it in my document. In short, it switches me out of the application I'm working in to open a folder just to close and ruins my workflow.Other examples are in Photoshop. I don't need the folder to open. I just transfer from the Downloads in Dock right into Photoshop. Or other apps I just click "File" > "Open..." and just open it there. I really have no use of the folder opening. So if anyone knows how to switch it off it'd really be appreciated!, because I really hate me screen's switching when I never used to. 21304
  • AirDrop files not being saved to downloads (or anywhere) on brand new macbook pro.Hi there!Got a brand new macbook pro a few weeks ago and have done every update available, but I'm having an issue with AirDrop files not showing up in my downloads or anywhere else. When I airdrop a photo, for instance, from my phone to my laptop, the alert shows and I can open the file, but it doesn't go to downloads or elsewhere. Even when I search the name of the file it doesn't show up anywhere. What can I do to fix this? It's incredibly frustrating. Thanks! 16752
  • Airdrop to iMac only works when airdrop window is open. This was never a problem before; airdrops from iPhone and iPad went through automatically. Airdrop is set to "everyone," all devices on same iCloud account, all up to date. When I am sitting at my computer and try to send from another device I hear the pleasant "dingdingding" indicating a file is incoming. The downloads icon in the dock bar bounces as if it has received something. When I open the downloads folder there is nothing there. If I do all of the above while the airdrop window is open, I get the "plunk" sound associated with moving files, and the item I sent is now in the downloads folder. How can I get back to not having to have the airdrop folder open to receive on my iMac? 4191

Experiencing issues with AirDrop files disappearing and recent files getting stuck on your MacBook Pro can be frustrating. These problems can disrupt your workflow and hinder your ability to access important files. Here are some steps to help address these issues:

For AirDrop Files Disappearing:

  1. Check AirDrop Visibility: Ensure that your AirDrop visibility settings are correctly configured. To do this, go to "Finder" > "Go" > "AirDrop" and check if you are discoverable to everyone or only to contacts. Make sure it's set to your preference.
  2. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi: Both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi should be turned on for AirDrop to work seamlessly. Verify that both are enabled in your MacBook's settings.
  3. Device Compatibility: Ensure that the device you are sending or receiving files from via AirDrop is compatible. Some older devices might have limited compatibility.
  4. File Format: AirDrop works best with common file formats like PDF, images, videos, and documents. Check if the files you are trying to send are in a supported format.
  5. Restart Bluetooth: Sometimes, restarting your MacBook's Bluetooth can resolve issues. Go to "System Preferences" > "Bluetooth" and turn it off, then turn it back on.

For Recent Files Getting Stuck:

  1. Check Storage: Insufficient storage space on your MacBook can lead to issues with recent files. Check your available storage by going to "Apple Menu" > "About This Mac" > "Storage." If you're running low on space, consider freeing up some storage.
  2. Spotlight Indexing: Recent files are often accessed through macOS's Spotlight search. If indexing is stuck or incomplete, it can affect recent file listings. You can reindex Spotlight by going to "System Preferences" > "Spotlight" > "Privacy" and adding your hard drive. Then, remove it to trigger reindexing.
  3. Clear Cache: Cache files can sometimes cause issues. You can clear cache using third-party apps like CleanMyMac or manually by navigating to ~/Library/Caches and deleting relevant cache folders.
  4. Restart: A simple restart can often resolve minor glitches. Try restarting your MacBook to see if the recent files issue persists.
  5. macOS Update: Ensure that your macOS is up-to-date. Sometimes, Apple releases updates that include bug fixes for these kinds of issues.
  6. Reset NVRAM/PRAM: Resetting the non-volatile RAM (NVRAM) or parameter RAM (PRAM) can reset certain system settings that might be affecting your recent files. To do this, restart your MacBook and press and hold Option, Command, P, and R keys simultaneously until you hear the startup sound for the second time.

If these steps don't resolve the issues, it's advisable to contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store for further assistance, as there could be underlying hardware or software problems that require more in-depth troubleshooting.
