Louisiana Program Overview

Property Tax-Aide features the Homestead Exemption and the Special Assessment Level Freeze for Louisiana.

The information on this page is updated as new information becomes available by the relevant tax agencies.

Homestead Exemption

The Louisiana homestead exemption is a tax exemption on the first $75,000 of the value of a person’s home. This exemption applies to all homeowners. No matter how many houses are owned, only one homestead exemption can be claimed, which is a maximum of $7,500 of assessed value.

Eligibility

  • One must own and occupy the house as their primary residence.

Application Deadline

Please consult your local assessor for exact deadlines as they may differ from parish to parish.

Required Documentation

When applying for the Homestead Exemption, be prepared to provide the following:
  • A recorded copy of your act of sale for the property
  • A copy of your valid Louisiana Driver’s License/State ID that reflects the property address
  • A copy of a current unpaid energy, cable, or landline telephone bill (account must be in the applicant’s name). Both the service location and mailing address on any bill provided must match the address of the property for which the exemption is being applied. The bill provided must also show standard residential usage.

Special Assessment Level Freeze

A Special Assessment Level Freeze applies to the homestead of persons who are 65 years of age and older or permanently disabled and adjusted gross income is $100,000 or less. The level may change from year to year, so it is advisable to check with your assessor’s office to determine whether you qualify. This special assessment will freeze the assessed value of the homestead for as long as the applicant owns and resides in the home and income does not exceed the maximum allowed.

Eligibility

If you have homestead exemption on your home, you can apply to freeze the assessed value of your home (not your taxes) if you are either:
  • Anyone age 65 and older as long as you have homestead exemption; OR
  • If you are a disabled veteran with a service-connected disability rating of 50% or greater as determined by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs or by a member of the armed forces or Louisiana National Guard and either killed in action, missing in action, or prisoner of war for longer than 90 days; OR
  • A person who is permanently and totally disabled as determined by a final non-appealable judgment of a court or as certified by a state or federal administrative agency with authority to do so; AND
  • Your adjusted gross income (both husband and wife) does not exceed the income threshold of $100,000 (to be adjusted by the Consumer Price Index beginning in tax year 2026).
  • When submitting your application to freeze your assessed value, you will be required to select one of the three options plus meet the income threshold requirement.

Application Deadline

Please consult your local assessor for exact deadlines as they may differ from parish to parish.

Required Documentation

To have your assessed value frozen you will need to provide the following:
  • A completed Special Assessment Level Freeze application
  • A completed Special Assessment Level Freeze application
  • If applicable, a copy of a current state or Federal Declaration of Disability (such as a current Social Security Award letter that states that you are entitled to monthly disability benefits), or
  • If applicable, a Veterans Administration (VA) letter of determination or notice of award that confirms that you have a service-connected disability of 50% or more
  • The address on any award letter provided must correspond to the address on the application
  • A copy of proof of household income from all sources. Acceptable proof of income includes: Social Security Award Letter, Retirement/Pension Award, signed copy of previous year’s Form 1040 from your Federal Income Tax Return
