Can you make a key for a lock without the original? ›

Can I make a duplicate key without the original? It's possible to have a duplicate key made without the original. If you don't have the original key or it has been too worn down over time, you'll need to see a professional locksmith who can use a code cutter to identify the groove depths of your lock's key code.

You can visit a Master Lock Distributor / Retailer or submit a Lost Combination form. Bring your lock to the retailer. Be sure that it is not attached to anything. If you do not bring the lock, or it is attached to something, we will not release the combination.

What should I do? If you recorded the key number, you may be able to get replacement keys from a hardware store or locksmith. If you didn't record the number, contact a locksmith to remove your lock. Please note there will likely be a fee for this service.

The Bolt Cutter Method

To open a lock using bolt cutters, position the shears on either side of the shackle (the u-shaped upper part of the lock). Squeeze the handles of the bolt cutters together until the shackle is severed, then remove the lock from the door or box you are trying to open.

Though AutoZone no longer offers key cutting, you can still get assistance with your vehicle needs with service such as battery testing, fix finder, and other services at your local AutoZone store.

In many cases, simply cutting a new key for the existing lock is a good choice, and it's usually the less expensive option. If you're concerned about someone using your lost keys, changing locks is recommended. Locksmiths deal with this situation daily, so they're a good resource when making this decision.

Contact a locksmith. If you have lost your only set of house keys, key replacement is your only option. You will need to get in touch with a reputable and experienced local locksmith who will be able to make you a new key. A skilled locksmith will create a key to lock by hand, without needing the original key.

To recover from a lost or unknown combination, you will need the six-digit serial number stamped into the lock case below the bolt and on the circuit board located on the inside of the cover (see photographs below). Divide the serial number into three two-digit numbers. This will be your recovery combination.

Is there a master key for all locks? For certain systems of locks, yes. A master key is specifically designed to unlock a given locking system. One safe-keeping key can help open a lock if its paired key is lost or damaged.

Does every Master Lock have a different key? ›

In a Master Keyed system, a master key opens all the locks in the system although each lock also has its own unique key.

A locksmith will recommend you change your door locks if you lose your keys as a security prevention. Changing your locks after losing your keys will stop anyone from accessing your home who does not have permission to.

Home Depot can duplicate keys as long as you have the original. They can also duplicate car keys and transponder keys but they can't give you access to your car if you have lost your car key. They can't rekey a lock or install high-security locks around your home or business.

There's no such thing as a universal key. Sometimes a group of locks are all keyed alike so the same key will open all of them for convenience.
