Lost Critical path

A colleague of mine is working on a rather complex schedule. To date we've
been able to find the critical path. Last night he made some changes to it
and now the CP has disappeared, utterly gone. I can't imagine why this is
since there are a bunch of tasks that are linked so you would think it would
show *some* CP even if inaccurate. Can anyone list reasons why the CP would
not appear? Time is somewhat of the essence on this one as we are presenting
the CP this morning to start a crashing exercise. Thanks

Have you added a field called Critical to the table on the left? It may
just be that the Gantt Chart isn't displaying the bars in red - maybe you
changed the view inadvertently.

1) Add the Critical field. Confirm that some tasks display "Yes."
2) Toggle to the Tracking Gantt. That may solve your problems.
3) Go back to the original Gantt and run the Gantt Chart Wizard. (the magic
wand looking thingy)

Did it disappear from the Gantt Chart? Perhaps just turned off from
display? Use the Gantt Chart Wizard to turn it back on? (Menu:
Format/Gantt Chart Wizard).

If that doesn't do it; what changes were made? Can you go back to a
version before those changes?

In the Schedule Table, what is the Free Slack and Total Slack (any zeroes)?
In Tools, Options, Calculation what is the definition of Critical, 0 or some
other number?
Send me the plan.

The critical path is easily obscured if you key dates. Keyed dates establish
a "start/finish no earlier than" constraint that quickly obscures the
critical path.

In addition to the suggestions already posted, consider inserting the
Constraint Type and Constraint Date columns. You want as many tasks as
possible to be of type "As Soon As Possible"

Hi Jpstewar,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

Introducing any gap in the scheduled critical path will cut the critical path. This can be a date typed in or a task bar moved to the right. This is because the constraint so created is interpreted by the critical path calculation to be a discontinuity - a gap which equates to a delay or slack. This is why, when using automatic resource levelling, often the only critical task is the last one, as many of the tasks have been delayed awaiting a resource to become available.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at this web address: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Hi

Check if there is an imposed date constraint for the last activity.

Due to modifications in the schedule, if the project is finishing before
this imposed date, you may lose the critical path.

I hope it helps.

Lost Critical path (2024)

FAQs

What is the critical path method answer? ›

The critical path method is a technique that allows you to identify tasks that are necessary for project completion. The critical path in project management is the longest sequence of activities that must be finished on time to complete the entire project.

Why does my MS project not have a critical path? ›

Show the critical path in the Gantt Chart view

Choose View > Gantt Chart Format. Choose Format, and then select the Critical Tasks check box.

What if there is more than one critical path? ›

Complex projects often have multiple project critical paths, and in order for the project to reach a successful completion, each of these paths must be carefully managed. Even if the primary path is achieved, a lack of progress on any of the follow-on paths could doom the project to failure in the long run.

What is a critical path example? ›

For example, if you're building a house, the critical path might include activities like digging the foundations, building the walls, and installing the roof. If any of these critical activities fall behind schedule the whole project gets delayed.

What is the critical path method for dummies? ›

Critical Path Method
  • LIST ALL NECESSARY TASKS for the project or process under analysis.
  • DETERMINE CORRECT SEQUENCE OF TASKS: ...
  • DIAGRAM THE NETWORK OF TASKS; time should flow left to right.
  • Between each two tasks, DRAW CIRCLES FOR "EVENTS." Where events signal the beginning or end of a task.

Does a project always have a critical path? ›

There is always one overall critical path for any project schedule. The new critical path would then become the series of tasks you track more closely to make sure the finish date you want.

Why is my critical path broken? ›

The following is a list of common causes for critical path breaks: The activity start or finish is constrained. The predecessor activity has undocumented lag. An external predecessor drives activity start.

Does crashing affect critical path? ›

Critical Path Mapping: Tasks on the critical path affect the project's delivery date. Crash only the tasks that are on the critical path or are likely to become critical tasks. Crashing tasks outside of the critical path, and therefore do not influence the delivery date, is a waste of resources.

What is the critical path rule? ›

The time required to traverse each path is the sum of the times associated with all jobs on the path. The critical path (or paths) is the longest path (in time) from Start to Finish; it indicates the minimum time necessary to complete the entire project.

Does every network only have one critical path? ›

Also, it's important to note that some activities on the critical path may not have slack because any delay in these activities will cause a delay in the overall project. Furthermore, a network may have more than one critical path, so the statement that every network has only one critical path is false.

What is the critical path in Quizlet? ›

A critical path is the sequence of project network activities which add up to the longest overall duration, regardless if that longest duration has float or not. This determines the shortest time possible to complete the project. Critical Chain Method.

Which is the best definition of critical path? ›

In project management, the critical path is the longest sequence of tasks that must be completed to execute a project. The tasks on the critical path are called critical activities because if they're delayed, the whole project completion will be delayed.

How to calculate es ef ls lf and slack? ›

To calculate ES, LS and S with the following formula EF = ES + t LF = LS + t- S = LS-ES or S = LF-EF 7 In the Table 3 there are two non-critical work is the activity of two preparation tools mixer and the preparation of machine tools, meaning that in the activity there is a slack time of 3.8 hours.

What is critical path method in decision science? ›

CPM or the Critical Path Method is an algorithm used in project management that is used to schedule project activities. The critical path refers to the longest stretch of the activities, and a measure of them from start to finish.
