LEGO Goes Green

PLANT PIECES: Most of LEGO’s plant pieces, like trees and leaves, will be made from bioplastic.

Each year, LEGO makes 19 billion toy bricks out of plastic. But since August, the company has been molding a select few of its toys from a new material—one created from plants.

Traditional plastic is made from oil. This nonrenewable resource can’t be replaced once it’s used up. But LEGO’s new bricks are made out of bioplastic. This material is created from plants instead of oil. Unlike oil, these plants are renewable resources that can be grown as needed.

LEGO aims to make all its products more sustainable, or better for the environment, by 2030. “The actions we take today have an impact on tomorrow,” says Tim Brooks, a vice president at LEGO.

BIOPLASTIC PRODUCTS

This graph shows the amount of bioplastics produced in 2016 to make different products, including packaging. How much more bioplastic was used to create flexible packaging than consumer goods like LEGOs?
