L-Methylfolate supplementation can be helpful in those who have an underactive MTHFR (Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase) enzyme. About 40% of the American population have the C677T type mutation, which has been associated with a 40-80% reduction in the enzyme’s efficiency (one mutation = 40%; 2 mutations = 80%).
This enzyme is responsible for the conversion of folate (vitamin B9) into the biologically active form of methylfolate (which is what this supplement is). Methylfolate is used by the body in the production of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, which are involved in the regulation of mood and anxiety, and the mechanisms of actions of antidepressants.
There are many different doses of L-methylfolate but I recommend starting at 5mg x3 weeks, then 10mg x3 weeks, then 15mg there on. I start low because, for some, L-methylfolate can lead to some anxiety. If the anxiety persists for more than 1 week, I would stop the supplement.
