Is it worth getting GMK keycaps? ›

If you value craftsmanship, diverse color options, and a distinctive tactile experience, GMK keycaps are well worth their hefty price.

With regard to our high quality standards, we manufacture our keycaps - as well as our entire product range - exclusively in Germany.

When comparing the GMK clone to the GMK set, there's obvious differences in both quality and material (or how its applied). I know that GMK is getting a lot of hate on this subreddit, but the quality of GMK is better. The clone set can't replace that, if money isn't a factor.

GMK and PBT keycaps both have their pros and cons. While the ABS used by GMK comes in more vibrant colors, the feel and softness of the material are downsides. PBT, on the other hand, may have more subdued coloring, but stand the test of time and provide a silky texture throughout their lifecycle.

The name GMK is an acronym for the family names of the three original founders of the company: Güntner, Meinhardt, and Kredler. Manfred Güntner and Wolfgang Kredler are Managing Directors of the company to this day, while Mr. Meinhardt is no longer affiliated with the company.

ABS vs PBT: Which is better? PBT is considered to be superior in terms of feel, robustness, and looks. The price is slightly higher than ABS, however we, alongside pretty much the whole mechanical keyboard community, think that the price is worth it.

However, the GMK double-shot ABS keycaps are an exception. They incorporated thick ABS materials and applied expensive processing techniques to get solid, high-quality, and comfortable hand-feel keycaps, which explains their exorbitant prices in the market.

Are GMK keycaps smooth? ›

Cherry GMK is made of ABS and begins as a 6 or 7 on the smooth scale (there's some texture to start with) but ABS will shine over time… Cherry EPBT is made of PBT and is about mid-range, 5. SP SA, ABS version, is almost glossy, with a slightly glazed surface (so a 9 on the smooth scale).

Cherry profile keycaps are the most comfortable design on the market. They are shorter than the OEM keycaps, but they have a similar structure. Cherry keycaps satisfy all tastes, no matter if used for gaming or typing purposes, mostly because they are comfortable to use.

Use PBT Keycaps

The key to “how to prevent keycap shine” is the PBT material. As we have mentioned that PBT keycaps won't be oily for a very long time, it's best for you to consider a well-made PBT keycap set.

GMK is an example of high quality ABS. They don't shine easily. Because slowly rubbing the top portion of abs plastic off of a keycap with friction means your hands are dirty or oily. It's still ABS.
